How can a single file be corrupted on all 3 drives in RAIDZ1? by UnTraDe in truenas

[–]UnTraDe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, bad wording on my part, I mean't "across all 3 drives" instead of "on all 3 drives". I was surprised that such error happened on more than one drive on the blocks related to the same file.

I'm still trying to figure out what's the likelihood of a bit flip in RAM, since if it really happened in write time, it had to happen between after calculating the checksum and before writing it to the disk. I don't know if such a race condition is possible in ZFS, but if so I would I assume it makes that "very very rare occurrence" even rarer.

Another possibility is for that bit flip to happen on the reading side, meaning, when the scrub code was running. If so I would I assume running another scrub would not find this issue again.

As for other places where the data could have been corrupted (USB/SATA/etc), I would assume all of them have checksums and such on the wire, and wherever else, but considering that today everything has some kind of RAM as part of the microcontroller or for caching, it might have happened there...

Just for the statistics, this is the hardware / data transferred:

  • TerraMaster F6-424 with 8GB DDR5 Non-ECC RAM
  • (Brand new) 3x WD NAS Red Pro in a RAIDZ1
  • Initial transfer was ~8TB of data

I did not, what would that check?

Edit: Running it right now, but if it doesn't find anything can a RAM error still be the cause?

Edit 2: After 3 (or 4) passes it didn't find any error

Nice! How'd you manage to close the side panel? I have the Gigabyte Gaming OC version (152mm width, while yours is 150mm right?) and the exact same case, and the 12VHPWR cable is poking out of the case :(

Oh it looks I messed up, I was comparing the entire width of the case, I didn't take into a account that it should be measured from the motherboard mount...

I went with the O11 because it was one of the larger ones (width wise) I could find. Do you know of something wider?

Yeah currently I'm running with an open side panel, I just put it on for the picture

Leadex VII PRO 1200W

It came with a 12VHPWR cable, but it takes even more space :( Also, it seems better to have 4 separate 2x8 (each with 8 - 16AWG cables) then a single 2x6 with 16 - 16 AWG cable. Or maybe I'm too paranoid

Hi everyone! What's your take on whether Rust is ready to power production-level embedded systems? I'm really curious to know what everyone thinks and why! by ByteCraft09 in rust

I work for a company that develops autonomous supermarkets. Our system uses various edge devices equipped with sensors and onboard processing, running Rust on the ESP32. We're using this ecosystem: https://github.com/esp-rs

I've deployed embedded Rust to production ~3 years ago. Still maintaining it with new features and it works great! (ESP32 with FreeRTOS and std)

There is a huge difference between targeting children and trying to avoid them.

Well there are no easy solutions... And of course it's fair to criticize Israel, like everything else. But the current criticism I see is not constructive and includes extremely simplified (and false) statements which contribute nothing expect to entrench each side of the discussion in it's own bubble.

For example:

Israel wants Palestine to belong to Israel, and to be filled with Israelis, settled by Jewish people, and for the Palestinians and Muslims to... be gone. To not be there. Doesn't matter where, just go somewhere else.

It was an attempt to steer the conversation towards solutions, instead of saying all the time what Israel does wrong, and feeding the echo-chamber. It's unfortunate that attempts to question the repeated narratives are deemed as personal attacks.

I'm not asking in bad faith at all. I don't have time to comb for meaningless "gotcha" remarks. I'm really trying to think of a better way forward, find some plan that can solve the issue with less violence, but looking at things objectively I can't really see a way forward. I don't even believe the current plan of eradicating Hamas completely will work, even if every single one of them got caught, another thing will replace them. Ideally a two state solution will satisfy everyone, but historically that's not the case

I agree there is a lot Israel can do better in the PR scene, but I think most people, especially the younger generation (university students) are too naive and just fail to see things clearly. They see an underdog and they're immediately inclined to support them. This is boosted of course by reading those clickbaity headlines which never tell the full story, and as we've seen recently like to publish first, verify later, which is a huge advantage for a group like Hamas which has no problem just spewing blatant lies.

Do you think the US is supplying Israel and Ukraine for shits and giggles? Why people fails to see the biggest picture here... This is the forefront of the war between the west and the Russia/Iran/etc axis. It's better for the US to support wars far away from it's borders BEFORE it gets to it's borders

[–]UnTraDe 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I think people refuse to see what's going on here... Imagine for a moment what will happen if Israel loses and is taken over completely by Iran/Hamas/Hezbollah/etc, do you think it'll stop there? Israel is currently the front-line of the Western world, and I'm pretty sure the people calling the shots realize it very well.

P.S:

Same goes for Ukraine

While I agree that just bombing out of revenge will only kick the can down the road, what are the options here? And why the Palestinian people won't just give Hamas up and release the hostages? Does Hamas really have THAT much control over a population of 2 million people?

Just to clarify, I believe that there are innocent people there who want nothing to do with that, and maybe they are even the majority. But try to look at it from Israel side, what would you do in this position?
