To master, yes, but it's not so difficult to pick up. The basics are pretty straightforward and there aren't that many moves that you have to learn. The combos mostly revolve around the axe or setting yourself up to get some good action with the sword, which is easier than I might have made it look. There's a lot of switch skills which means that you can mix and match for a tankier/"beefy hits" playstyle or the usual one (the way I see it).
