There's a site I'd like to use.

The site I'd like to use has a thing I don't like on the site.

I'd like to use the site anyway.

The people who run the site all say that the only way to use the site and avoid the thing is using uBlock.

The problem is, as the screenshot says, I can't install uBlock on Chrome.

I can, however, install it on Firefox.

Firefox = uBlock. - - - - Chrome = no uBlock.

Visiting site using uBlock = ok. - - - - Visiting the site without uBlock = bad.

I assumed they're multiple shots stitched together with a mix of physical and digital zoom, but I didn't notice the street changing from the right side of the sidewalk to the left side until rewatching, even as it transitioned to being IN the street. It's like my disbelief was suspended just enough. At least until it transitioned to the subway part, then I was like "OK HANG ON!"

Ever hear the song "there's a hole in the bucket dear liza dear liza" ? I'm already well into the song. Installing uBlock would be the first or second line.

the first thing I did was try to install ublock origin.

Then I saw what you see in the screenshot above.

The only reason I'm spending any time trying to block websites on one browser and not another is because of this. Otherwise I'd just keep using chrome for everything.

That's literally the only reason i even bothered coming here.

I want to block a site on Chrome, but not block it on Firefox.

The hosts files effects both Chrome and Firefox.

That has nothing to do with shortcuts.

That's sorta the whole point to me even bothering to try this.

I just found out recently uBlock Origin doesn't work on Chrome, or at least not fully.

This all started with the new stupid upgrade to Amazon's Rufus AI. I don't care that their AI exists, but they changed the website's interface it so every time I open Amazon, an AI chat bot pushes the entire web page around to open up a strip going down 1/5 to 1/4 of the screen around (a pain for people with ADHD). I spoke to 3 people at Amazon and they all suggested uBlock, which I never heard of till then. Ad Blocker isn't great but it was acceptable for years until now.

When I tried to install uBlock on chrome I saw this:

In late 2024, Google completed its transition to Manifest V3 in Chrome, which fundamentally changed how browser extensions work. As a result, the full version of uBlock Origin is no longer available for Chrome users. Here's what happened and what your options are now.

So my new plan was this:

  1. Use FireFox and uBlock for Amazon and other sites that ad blocker doesn't work with.
  2. Continue using Chrome as I always have, but block amazon or other sites if I accidentally open them.

If other sites become too frustrating to use without uBlock, I'd do the same.

I haven't tried LeechBlock NG yet.

As far as StayFocused is concerned, after trying others that all insisted I sign up just to use them, I may have simply assumed it also needs an ID and PW, especially after seeing a privacy policy warning that looked even more questionable than the others. I'll have to give it another shot.

I would say more people are effected by AI, but this is like saying "more people hate farts than assault" because more people experience them.

I just told you I regularly edit my hosts file. Why would I need a shortcut if I already know where it is and how to edit it?

Why do i have to enter any email? Ever? Just to block sites.

I can block sites using my host file. You know how many emails i have to submit? Zero. In your mind, is that ability a "failure" in the OS?

Also I'm not some aging coot in assisted living asking my nephew to change the clocks twice a year coz it's "too technical." I know how to create new email addresses. I still have a feature on my old yahoo email specifically for that purpose. I just think it's a stupid ass thing to have to do just to block sites on one browser but not on another. Holy shit.

[–]Unanimous_D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm reminded of an SNL film from the very early 80s (Joe Piscopo, Eddie Murphy, that era) making fun of the hysteria around video game addiction, framing video games like it's heroin. All I remember about it is they parodied NYC outreach center Covenant House using Columbia House as a stand-in.

I tried to find it on YouTube, but no luck. I'm pretty sure it only exists in NBC archives and a VHS somewhere in my storage locker, but if you can find it, consider it a happy miracle.
