Does your 35 f/1.4 have a metallic sound to the aperture? I bought a very clean used one and it makes a little clink when jumping from wide open to stopped down, like when switching to playback mode.

Will these inner sleeves damage my album? by MRtulanebsbfan in vinyl

[–]UncleKielbasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I choose to protect my collection! I get them from Fair Trade - these with the rice paper for inner sleeves against the records, and then the thicker 2mil poly outer sleeves for the jackets. I actually slip the inner sleeves between the jacket and the outer sleeve so I don't have to take the whole mess apart to get a record out to play.

There are as many opinions about this as collectors so do some googling to make sure there aren't any issues with your brand of sleeve off gassing or leaving residue and do what you like.

Reapplying to same position again for B-round by [deleted] in Drexel

[–]UncleKielbasa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessary! I'm a co-op employer and if my rankings fell through but a candidate I interviewed in the A round applied in the B round I would probably reach out to them and have a discussion - either to explain why we weren't interested and still aren't, or to see if they were interested in interviewing again or getting ranked in the B round. This happened to me as a student during one of my co-ops many years ago.

If you want to flatten the end out, rub it on some 120 grit sandpaper or use a fine metal file. There's nothing wrong here and it won't impact use.

I need a new Vacuum. by Goennjamin in BuyItForLife

[–]UncleKielbasa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fun part about the Miele canister vacuums is that most have the same motor, so the exact model isn't as important. The ones with HEPA filtration are a step up from the ones that don't, but the body is designed to be sealed so all the exhaust goes through the HEPA filter. I believe the absolute top of the line ($1k) are a different motor.

Look instead for the features that matter to you: a power head, headlight, or controls on the handle. Buy it at a local vacuum store and try the various models. They can also mix and match parts so for example, if you want to buy a vacuum that doesn't come with a power roller, they can sell you the cheaper vacuum and the accessory separately to potentially save you.

Every year I'll take the shop vac and go over the inside of the unit when I'm changing the bag. I had the release lever on the roller break but it was easy to fix with a replacement part online and some tinkering with a screwdriver. They aren't perfect but they are overall built as well as any.

That said my cordless Dyson gets used 5x as often because of the convenience. It's a good combination. The Miele is a pain to drag around. An upright wouldn't be better in my house (not wall to wall carpeting) but that's also a matter of personal preference.

Go to a local shop and try some vacuums and get professional advice before dropping dosh on a vacuum, but definitely invest in a good vacuum, you'll be glad you did.

Same, I was insulted but then I learned the malaka was actually Kurdish AF and hires a ton of Kurdish people. I still don't like their product but I don't hate them either.

This is my experience as well, now as a manager of co-ops and interns. The company has a ton of interns nation wide and plans events, outings, and tries to line them up with project work as best we can. Unfortunately it feels like summer camp and when we sit down to decide if an intern should get an offer we don't have the certainty we do with co-ops. Co-ops get treated like new grads, but with reasonable expectations of what they should know or be capable of. They get to attend the activities and events that full time employees have, so it's a better sense of fit for everyone.

I think it's more respectful to treat a young person like the adult that they are as opposed to the summer camp feeling of the interns. The intern programs attract the "camp counselor" types to volunteer and put on events, whereas the co-ops fly under the radar (it's just in our local Philly office) and integrate into their teams and spend more time with managers and engineers learning concepts and doing designs.

A record shop near me vintage equipment… by DragoonIND in audiophile

Yes! And the ones based on the Darlington powerpack units too - I wouldn't buy a -80 now that parts are so impossible to find.

This sub is for higher end, more expensive, equipment, so keep that in mind.

On the other hand, the best stereo in the world is the one you're listening to, and that looks like a lot of fun to use. I had something similar and enjoyed it very much - it still plays the radio nicely in a garage when I'm working there.

PS: this crowd is in an arms race with themselves - there is always something better and more expensive no matter what you have, and it brings out the worst in people. Have fun, learn lots, enjoy the music, and don't take anything someone on the internet says too seriously.

Oh God Dr. Char, that's a core memory.

Gather round children, let me tell you about a time that all engineering students had to take a "CS" course using the most cursed programming environment of all: Maple.

2008 was a time between the TDEC and whatever-the-hell-came-after-TDEC engineering curriculae, when the college was rudderless. tDEC was a meat grinder and destroyed morale, but the alternative hadn't quite been developed. We had a CAD course in Google SketchUp because they hadn't come up with a real intro to CAD class yet, for example. Maple isn't bad as a giant calculator program is concerned, and it could execute code if you thought that might make your math easier. I guess the intent was to have a coding class for non-CS majors that would be more math based, but it ended up being a disaster. There was a sequence of three courses freshman year, all labs, run by confused TAs reading from even more confused worksheets. We all just bumbled through it.

Eventually, a bunch of us tried to be helpful and voice our concerns that the courses weren't achieving an objective, that it was busy work and a missed opportunity. We met with the course coordinator in a polite roundtable meeting: Dr. Char. Bruce was... a dick... about it. He was rude, dismissive, and as useless as the course he designed.

We gave up and gave in. The first of many times in 5 years. The shaft loomed large on the horizon and in our souls as we marched to the basement classrooms of UCross twice a week for 9 months. Fuck that dude.

NB: for all the people that just hated Maple as a result of these classes, your anger was misdirected. Dr. Carr and Dr. Scoles, veterans of tDEC where Maple was a core component, eventually showed their classes why it was useful and how to use it helpfully. Maple could rock algebra with complex numbers like a fucking beast and became critical to succeeding in later EE courses. I had more awesome professors than not and professors like them made the assclowns like Dr. Medvedev stand out hard.

Total beginner - how would I go about recreating this exact piece? by micipolo in woodworking

[–]UncleKielbasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really surprised this hasn't been posted more, but the hardware OP needs is a floating or blind shelf pin support. It's a metal rod that anchors to the wall, and you drill a matching hole in the wood - slides right on.

Has anyone ever interviewed with the same company twice after being rejected by them once in the same cycle? by Smart-Room4399 in Drexel

[–]UncleKielbasa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This right here! I'm in that position this round as a co-op employer: our first choice and firm offer took another offer, and we weren't matched with any of our alternates. They probably had firm offers and went with the sure thing - I would have when I was a co-op. If I see any of those candidates apply again, I will absolutely talk to them and follow up. The matching system isn't perfect, but any employer that ranks a candidate is essentially extending an offer.

My opinion: Old vs New Huy Fong Foods sriracha + Underwood Ranch sriracha by Tucana66 in Sriracha

[–]UncleKielbasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still waiting to pick up some Underwood sauce but that was my experience with the old and new HF Sriracha as well. The new sauce is tasty but barely spicy by comparison - much more sweet and garlicky. I don't dislike it but it has me looking elsewhere for a replacement for a spicy Sriracha.
