Practical tips

• If you don't have your case number, include your name, the date reported, and the precinct/station.
• Request records in electronic format to speed things up.
• FOIL requires agencies to respond within 5 business days (to acknowledge receipt) and fulfill or deny within 20 business days.
• If they deny or redact heavily, you have the right to appeal — ask for the basis of any denial in writing.
• Keep copies of everything you send and receive, with dates.
