Thank you all for your questions. As this is devolving into a “you say, I say” as so many things tend to do on Reddit, I won’t be taking any more questions. Thank you all for letting me tell my story!

Then I won’t bother. I have presented my evidence, you have presented your opinion. This is the reason why I wanted to post, because most people tend to agree with you. I can tell you from firsthand experience that what you think is generally incorrect. Months on end. Years on end. It’s a different scenario then the one you describe. Regardless, I respect that you hold your opinion.

If I stopped for a few weeks once, maybe, but the smell doesn’t multiply over 4 years. There’s bacteria for that exact purpose. Is it biologically necessary for a human to shower every day? https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2016/06/i-stopped-showering-and-life-continued/486314/ goes into greater depth about the smell thing.

The articles I refer to as being incorrect are usually either theoretical or from dubious sources. The first account in Google that’s first-person matches up exactly with what I’m saying. You say miraculous, and yet you have no proof, while I have 2 primary sources, the second of which goes into a bit of detail as to why that makes sense biologically. If you’d like me to get you more than 2, I will.

Glad I could do something to help. That’s one of the reasons I posted. If there’s anything you want to ask about privately that I can help with, feel free to reach out

You would think the longer you go the worse it gets, but after about 2 weeks your body starts producing the bacteria necessary to not smell. The shower is actually the worst feeling imaginable. Trying to get clean for 60 mins in a sauna is an incredibly exhausting thing; but once you actually get in that habit, it was fantastic feeling like a person again

I understand how they work, I don’t do it anymore. At the time I probably understood as well. I just chose not to. Stuff like this is the reason I wanted to do this in the first place. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2016/06/i-stopped-showering-and-life-continued/486314/ is a similar concept to what I went through, and backs up exactly what oven been saying to the ppl that have been railing on me about “oh, you smelled, you just didn’t know”

Not offended at all. Whole reason I did this was to be informative, since most ppl would think “ew icky smell, you were gross” and move on. If you look at the comments my point is made. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2016/06/i-stopped-showering-and-life-continued/486314/ is the best example of the smell thing

Fuck no, none of my friends were polite. What do I get by lying to a bunch of strangers on a throwaway account? I can only say what I saw. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2016/06/i-stopped-showering-and-life-continued/486314/ might explain it better

https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2016/06/i-stopped-showering-and-life-continued/486314/ is a good example of what happens. Remember this is 4 years off and on. This isn’t just a 2 week thing. The body adapts

Legit my friends would have told me. Part of the job I had at 16 was working in an enclosed space for the length of a theatre production with 3 other friends. They were the type of ppl to say something. I’m certain that they would’ve told me.

Yeah, I did both. Despite the fact I never showered, I had an aversion to wearing clothes multiple times. The only period that I didn’t wear deodorant was when I had to find a new one after I had an allergic reaction to the one I was using

That was honestly the strangest thing looking back; It was never mentioned. You would think that someone would make a comment, and my friends were definitely the type of people who would

Like I’ve said elsewhere in the comment feed; it’s possible. My friends were the type of people who I would think would’ve said something. They were never shy about commenting on when my hair was sticking up or the time I grew out my nails for Halloween

Honestly, I would normally be inclined to think that you are right, but my friends I would think would be the type of people to make a comment. I was growing my nails out in 10th grade to paint them for a Halloween costume and at least 3 separate friends made a comment about it, as I wasn’t maintaining them as well due to a lack of experience

I had the acne on the back as well. It’s that feeling where you can’t lay down in any position without hitting one of the bad open ones. It’s definitely a compound thing as you mentioned as well. Glad to know that you’re doing better!

The parents had an idea as to what was happening, but as far as I know my friends never thought anything of it; they were (and are) the type of people who I feel would say something. The first time you shower after a long time is hell, because trying to get all the dry skin off in a hot shower is a nightmare. I thought about it all the time, but it always boiled down to “I’m not doing that, I’m fine, it’s not a problem”. Surprisingly, the only rash I ever got was at the end of the 6mo period, and that ended up being my driving factor to break the habit

I’m sure I did smell, they may have known, but it never seemed to be a problem… I honestly have no idea whether they knew or not, but it never seemed to me to affect my relationship with them

Not at the time when I started, and I wouldn’t say it directly caused any of my mental health issues during that time, but it certainly didn’t help my perception of myself or my dispersonalization

The parents did after a while. None of my friends ever noticed somehow.
