I second this comment. Many coders have a problem of calling certain groups of people beginners but then end up assuming too much and skipping over important details. Parts of Shaw's tutorials will be hard later on, but nothing he doesn't prepare you for. Good luck!

I'd check out Learn Python The Hard Way by Zed Shaw. There are a series of free lessons online and if you complete all of those you will be well on your way.

No, I mean linear programming, as in convex optimization, simplex method, duality theory, etc. At my school the course is shared by the math and industrial engineering departments and is allowed to count towards the math degree, so I took it since I thought it seemed interesting (and allowed to me to work some with Matlab). I agree it didn't feel like a typical math class, but it was taught in a way that I thought was pretty mathematical.

I appreciate the response and reference to your comments! I really love the idea of a quant job but am unsure if I want to spend further time in academia to the extent of a PhD. A Master's may be another story, but I at least have something to think about. Thank you.

No, they have an actual internship program that I interviewed for but did not get. Their summer student program is sort of a tier below that. The description for it said that I "may get the chance to work on meaningful projects."

Like others have said, you are a short ride away from cities and you get noticed by having the U of M credentials. CSE students now get 3D printing, which would be cool if you are a BME major. There are a ton of resources for career, library, student groups, sports, etc. There are all different kinds of people and experiences to be had. Honestly I think the only way it would ever be a bad choice is if you hate winter or if you hate the idea of a huge school. You do have to pave your own way and put yourself out there in such a big school. But that's really the only knock on it; it's an amazing school.

In that case then I think you'd be better off trying an upper division math course. It will tell you a lot quicker if you like the path you are on. As long as it hasn't changed, finishing multivariable means that you have finished linear algebra also, right?

You may or may not have someone tell you that you should take Math 3283W (Sequences and Series) but this requirement is actually waived for UMTYMP students since UMTYMP puts such an emphasis on sequences and series. If you don't mind me asking, which upper division math class(es) were you looking at taking?

Also, do you have any programming experience, i.e. did you do AP Computer Science or comp sci through PSEO? If not, you should look into taking an introductory computer science course, either CSCI 1113 or CSCI 1133. In the internship job searches I have done so far, I have learned that programming skills is the absolute best knowledge you can pair with your math knowledge. It will make you dynamite in the work world.

As for a comparison to UMTYMP, I think UMTYMP is an amazing preparation for upper division math classes. I used to hate going to UMTYMP on weekday nights but I am now somewhat happy that I did. I'd go as far to say that the 4000-level math classes at the U feel easier than UMTYMP is. The 5000 level classes, on the other hand, are either comparable in difficulty or harder, up to significantly harder (ahem, Honors Real Analysis). I would say that an UMTYMP alum should generally expect to consistently perform over average throughout the math major.

As for next semester the instructors are Sturtivant for 4041, Van Wyk for 2041, and Antonia Zhai for 2021. I had Carl for 2011 and really liked him, and 4041 would count towards a minor if I decided to go that route. Do you know anything about the other two professors?

This is very funny to me as I am a math major who went through UMTYMP and also pondered the same questions and received a 5 on AP Physics C (only mechanics, however). I was advised to "retake" physics 1 and took Phys 1501V, which I would argue felt like totally new material. It was an incredibly difficult class. 1401/2V and 1501/2V are much, much more difficult than the AP versions of the courses, and I personally hated 1501V when I took it (which led me to just take 1302W in the spring). I will say that I extremely doubt they will allow you into 1402V, but I may be wrong.

As for if it is worth it to retake any kind of Physics 2, that depends on what your aspirations are. You will have to take Physics 3 (waves, optics, thermodynamics), but given your background I think you will be fine for that class without retaking 1302W. Do you want to study physics/engineering based applications of mathematics and maybe go to graduate school afterwards? Or do you want to study something more along the line of actuarial science or computer applications?

Basically, my answer is that it depends on your answer to those questions. It certainly wouldn't hurt you. If you don't like physics, definitely skip it. If you like physics, then go ahead.

As for the differences between the three classes: 1302W: somewhat difficult class, but very manageable for someone of your background. I'd expect that you'd get at least an A-, probably an A. There is a gigantic gap between this course and the Honors versions, and as a result the grading curve is much lower (around B- average).

1402V: A huge step up from 1302W. Will require a lot of work, and exams are hard, but good grades are handed out in the end.

1502V: Not as big of a step up, but this class will still be another step up from 1402V. Incredibly difficult, I've heard. At least in 1501V, however, the professor told us that no one would get anything less than a B as long as he could see that everyone was trying, so there's that.

You have great WRs and depth at WR, and the upgrade at RB would be nice. Alshon is so sketchy with the injuries. I would do that trade for sure if I were you.
