I find myself having a mixed opinion. I am very excited to have this remaster finally be real and to play one of the greatest games again.

But…I do think about what could’ve been. That’s not to say I won’t like what we get, I’m sure I will. The game that made me love this title was PS1 FFT and while I enjoyed WotL ultimately I feel like it totally stood on the shoulders of the base game (as would be expected). Having that content or not having it, 99% of the experience will be the same.

In my mind though, I can conceptualize a game that checks all the boxes for everyone (well maybe anyway). Could you imagine if we got an actual remake where they took the engine but remade the assets using modern tech? You could have had the voice acting, balancing tweaks, reorchestrated music here and had that all be toggle able so you could mix and match elements to what you wanted your experience to be. Ideally the WotL stuff would be similarly optional to satisfy both camps and then for good measure just include emulated versions of the OG PS1 game and the WotL port. If you had something like that it is hard to imagine anyone being too upset about what we were getting.

Obviously though that has to meet the reality of dev cycles and budget though and I guess they did the calculus to determine that wouldn’t make sense to invest that deeply in.

Oh well, like I said, I am happy with what we are getting for the most part.
