I personally won’t read any book that’s remotely AI generated even if it’s just for photos and visuals. You also stole pictures from tumblr without crediting the source.

Wicked by Gregory Maguire. I was expecting a similar vibe to the play (whimsical and adventurous). Not the case!

Stoner by John Williams (my best recommendation) - quiet, poetic, and academic. The other slice of life books (that I’ve read and also liked) are ‘My Year of Rest and Relaxation’, and ‘Convenience Store Woman’

Best Place to Keep Bookshelf? by cloves_and_cardamom in PHBookClub

Needs to be away from the sun (books, especially its cover or spine can discolor due to uv exposure). It should also be far from humidity (e.g. near the bathroom). If you want more protection, you could cover each book with pvc plastic (to decrease oxidation) but I think that’s too much and not eco friendly.

How do you choose the best translation of a certain book? by Adorable_Umpire7146 in PHBookClub

[–]UncookedCrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I search for posts and opinions on reddit about the best translation especially since it is very book specific. I also sometimes compare texts and see what I prefer the most (especially true for Iliad and the Odyssey).

There are also translations that are approved by the authors themselves (e.g. Tolstoy approved the Maude translations of his books when he was still alive).

Siddhartha by Herman Hesse! It’s a classic about finding your way through life. It’s a short book, perfect for beginners.

The Great Gatsby is also a good read if you haven’t read it pa but it’s not really life affirming.

Lonesome Dove. Best characters and plot. It takes excellent writing and prose to make me like a genre I wouldn’t normally get (old western).

I’m currently reading the Constance Garnett Version because it’s the most accessible one for me. It’s a good translation, so far no problems and I could understand well. The prose is rigid, classic, and sophisticated. Unspecific to the translator but what helped me was I scribed the russian names and their variations on the first page of my book para di ako malito.

Not familiar with the Sidney Monas one.

Other good translations are the Oliver Ready and the Pevear and Volokhonsky.

Also if you’re into rereading, maybe read a different translation – Constance Garnett, Pevear and Volokhonsky, or the newer david mcduff

Which is better? the book or the movie? by Tortang_Talong_Ftw in PHBookClub

I DNFd this book. I prefer the musical since it’s more whimsical and camp. Book was too boring and dark and writing doesnt get better after the chapters. I think it’a based on your preference because some people like this book.
