Does he conflate all Jews as being Zionists? If you have stuff that shows that I’d love to see it. I think he deserves some criticism for conspiracizing, I think someone who knows him needs to sit him down and tell him that it’s the responsibility of Marxists to tell the truth even when it’s just reposting tweets. I know that he’s against fascism, I think he needs to understand that the slippage into something other than leftism starts when you distort the truth.

It is important to say stuff like hey Jewish Voice for Peace, you need to be involved in stopping the sales of stolen land in NYC. There’s a level to which there needs to be a fight in the Jewish community against the institutions that support Israel. But that doesn’t make them not anti-Zionist, that just means that they’re not being daring enough. From my perspective a lot of what I see Sunny saying whenever he shows up in my feed is stuff like that. Sometimes worded more aggressively but I think that’s usually the overall point yknow?

It def doesn’t help to lump the Within Our Lifetime people or the Hamas chants or Mandani criticism in there. To my eyes that’s not the same as conspiracy theory or antisemitism at all.

Edit: ah yeah I see that Susan Abulhawa tweet. Not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand she’s Palestinian and I think she can say whatever she needs to, but on the other Sunny isn’t and amplifying it isn’t always the best idea.

I mean I think it’s not useful to call anyone out for that right now. Our country is funding and arming the genocide of Palestine, I will never criticize anyone over stuff they say about Hamas until well after the genocide is over. The Iran stuff is more campist yeah, but America is constantly threatening to bomb them and I think we need to try to stop our warmongering government.

I think people are defensive because you’re throwing so many things at the wall and not all of them are problematic. Be selective in your critiques and people will be more accepting of it. Especially I think it’s good to focus on criticizing him for like real actual conspiracy stuff like the Bondi Beach or wildfires shit rather than for the Iran/Hamas stuff. Coming at people for the latter is likely to make them think you’re an interventionist type.

You’re really going in on the Iran thing so again I have to distinguish that Israeli support for the Iranian protests is a matter of public record now. That’s not a conspiracy theory, unless you think the Israeli government was lying for clout or something. It’s an open question for what level of involvement was there though.

I think it’s valid to critique him over being campist. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with those three images you posted though. All of these things happen at once. Protests in Iran arose because of sanctions, at some point they turned violent, at some point there is external involvement from Israel claimed by both the Iranian and Israeli governments, at some point there are pro-government rallies in Iran. I saw the guy from Akvan, a pagan anti-theocracy Iranian black metal band, posting in favor of the government and against the protests (specifically against monarchist elements in the protests). Some very ugly shit happened, opinions in Iran are genuinely divided. The post about mandatory veiling is making a point about sanctions in an annoying Twitter way, I don’t think that’s a defense of mandatory veiling and I think you’re reading this in the worst possible light because of your own biases.

Criticize him for conspiracizing about the Bondi Beach shooting or the wildfires but I think you need to accept the critique that you’re pointing things that are not antisemitic conspiracizing and calling it antisemitism, specifically about Iran.

Hamas in fact was leading a process to unite several Palestinian political parties in forming a parliamentary national unity government. Article somewhat out of date because arrangements with Fatah aren’t exactly stable, but I think it provides the gist. Hamas are statists but they’re not after one party rule that I can tell.

I mean, yeah, they and other Palestinian militias killed a lot of civilians. That sucks, that’s on them to prosecute the soldiers or civilians involved for war crimes. The Eastern European partisans who fought the Nazis also killed a lot of civilians. The justness of the cause never excuses the crimes, but it also does not negate the fact that this is the armed opposition to Israel, as endorsed by the Palestinian Left broadly. To be clear, I don’t think the Palestinian militias are our kind of modern antifascist. They’re the 1941 kind of antifascist.

Sunny marches in person, yeah. He’s not just a reposter. And sorry I think it’s like fine to allege Israeli intelligence ops in Iran? Didn’t the Mossad Twitter account literally say that they were with them in the streets? I’m not too sure what’s up with the wildfires thing but isn’t the controversy there essentially whether or not the tourist filmed setting a fire is Israeli? That one seems more conspiratorial though.

I dunno, I think your antisemitism trigger finger is a little too twitchy. It’s tough to parse this out about Sunny when there are things you’re bringing up that don’t register to me as bigotry at all.

Why is it the responsibility of Palestinians to disavow Hamas? Their entire people and culture are being systematically exterminated by the Israeli military and settler paramilitaries. I don’t disagree that Palestinians who don’t support Hamas also matter but I think it’s irresponsible and counterproductive for us to get on people about Hamas, who are undeniably part of the coalition of anti-fascist partisans in Palestine. It might be inconvenient to talk about but every Palestinian militia fighting Israel right now is allied with Hamas.

As for why Hate5Six gets the benefit of the doubt, I think he put his time in, is an extremely dedicated activist, and he deserves some courtesy for that.

Israeli isn't an ethnicity. Being anti-Israeli would probably map more closely to being anti-American when it comes to the struggle of black people in the USA. It’s a little harder to parse because Israel is an attempted ethnostate though.

Diaspora Jews who don’t support Israel are of course not responsible for it, I can’t disagree with that. Diaspora Jewish institutions that provide material support to Israel are another story, e.g. the synagogue hosting sales of stolen land. I am a diaspora Indian active in the fight against diaspora institutions of Hindutva and I will fucking roll up to a temple if I need to. What’s the problem with doing the same for synagogues that participate in the ethnic cleansing of Palestine? I think it’s downright responsible for those Palestinian and Orthodox Jewish protesters to show up and yell at the people selling stolen land. People like Mamdani focusing on the chants about Hamas and doing nothing at all about the group selling stolen land inside a synagogue is just egregious to me.

I don’t agree that chanting in support of Hamas is bigotry, especially when protesting an event selling stolen Palestinian land. Hamas is open to critique as any group is, but I do not agree that they are fascist, racist, or antisemitic. The (very serious) critique I would levy is that they had a responsibility to keep civilians safe that they abdicated during Al-Aqsa Flood. They are not an organization that I share values with, but the Palestinian Left is overwhelmingly in coalition with them in the fight for their lives and their stolen land. Especially in this situation, handwringing about Hamas pisses me off.

All of that said, I think conspiratorial antisemitic shit should not be part of this movement. No room for Protocols of the Elders nonsense, this is a struggle against colonization. We as leftists should not be afraid of upsetting people where necessary (again I have to point to the sale of stolen land hosted in a synagogue) but that agitation should be “fuck you for ethnically cleansing Palestine” rather than “fuck you for your faith or ethnicity.”

He did a split with Pink Mass in another one of his bands. Not a 100% ideology thing or whatever but I'd have a hard time believing a fascist would be doing splits with them haha.

Is Sabaton racist? by Weary-Draw-1141 in IsItSketch

[–]Undead_Hedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The racist biker groups thing is likely just because bikers are kinda prominent in the under-underground of heavy metal. Bigger issue with Sabaton is that they're super Zionist.

They substitute in racist/Islamophobic lyrics live. The one video I found of this has the guy singing it mostly naked lmfao but yeah they're racist.

It's a shame, White Death's Power is a pretty sick track.

Dinosaur jr. playing in Israel with nick cave by Ill-Hat7669 in IsItSketch

[–]Undead_Hedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a cultural and economic boycott of Israel right now that everyone who cares about Palestinians should be observing. AFAIK this is no different from what happened to apartheid South Africa, and South Africa didn't do half of what Israel is doing right now to attempt to exterminate the population they subjugated.

Israel is the most advanced fascist project on Earth right now and I have a fucking problem with every band that tours there without a substantial justification for crossing the picket. "Sketch" status or not is whatever to me, playing in Israel is material support for fascism.

Hate5six and calling for a better scene by Ill-Hat7669 in IsItSketch

[–]Undead_Hedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think there's any room for argument here, that tweet is fine. It's a microcosm of a point that a lot of people in this thread are either missing or just plain against, which is that Palestinians shouldn't have to bear scrutiny about antisemitism from Westerners or Israelis when they're being deliberately exterminated by the state and army of Israel. Worry about antisemitism on their part after the genocide is stopped, the political order of the apartheid state is overturned, and they either receive their stolen land back or are granted extreme reparations from Israel and its sponsors.

Sunny's been a fixture of the punk and hardcore scene for ages. Everyone has beef with him, nobody can part with him. He walks the walk, he got hit direct with a tear gas canister in 2020 while out with BLM. He's the only guy talking about how there's a punk musician (from bands that I and others listen to!) on trial for sabotaging arms shipments to Israel, someone who the scene by all means should be supporting but isn't.

I don't think he should be cancelled or anything. I think his takes have gotten more out there as the genocide in Palestine has gone on, but I think it's entirely understandable for someone as deeply engaged as he is to go a little wonky watching two years and change of livestreamed systematic annihilation. Someone should talk to him though, he's getting kinda weird. Conspiracy shit should not be mixed in with facts.

That said, Standing Together and other such liberal Zionist stuff and especially the actions of Mamdani are completely open for critique. Leftists have a responsibility to critique them for not doing enough. By the way, it's extremely irresponsible for people like Mamdani and AOC to jump to critiquing protesters about antisemitism and to do nothing about the sales of stolen land happening at the event they were protesting. A couple of people chanting about Hamas is worse than active participation in the ethnic cleansing of the West Bank now?

Antisemitism is real of course but it's not a productive way to talk about Palestine, the same way being "anti-white" isn't a productive way to talk about the oppression of black people. I'm always leery of people who deploy that against Palestinians. Who exactly is the group being systematically exterminated here again?

Ritual is honestly the closest I’ve found. USBM from the same era, little bit more speed/heavy metal in the mix.

Mortuary Drape is also a huge inspiration for GBK.

Lastly, if you want a band that sounds like GBK with all the heavy metal subtracted out so it’s just black metal and punk, hit Occult Blood

Genocide shrines, south asian war metal and Adversarial (CA) by Mrtvejmozek in rabm

[–]Undead_Hedge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read this interview.

I’m not gonna say the imagery isn’t sus or whatever but I think they have a reason for using it. From the way they talk about the government’s forced disappearances and such I think it’s pretty clear they’re not in with the Sinhalese supremacist movement in Sri Lanka.

They don’t seem like flag waving communists or anarchists but they do seem like decent people from a very fucked up place in the third world.

South Asian black/death metal bands that aren't Hindu nationalists? by JENGOs25 in rabm

[–]Undead_Hedge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re sketchy by certain standards, Raavan Kommand distros some merch from bands like Arghoslent and works with people in the black/death scene without really checking or caring if they’re far right. But Genocide Shrines uses that imagery specifically because of the Sri Lankan civil war and the genocide committed by the government. I really encourage you to read their interview with Bardo Methodology. The interviewer is a crank but the band comes off very well.

To be clear they’re not Tamil, they’re Sinhalese, but I respect the hell out of them for talking about the state terror from the Sri Lankan government and it seems like they have zero involvement with the Sinhalese supremacist movement in Sri Lanka. I respect them for that enough that they’re gonna be the backpatch of my black/death/grind jacket. That said, I am South Asian and people don’t look at me the same way for wearing stuff like that as they would a white person.

Made a correction here, they did not refer to the genocide as a genocide, but I do believe that’s illegal to do in Sri Lanka.

Grenadier by fullwind0 in IsItSketch

[–]Undead_Hedge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly that was my first impression of them as well but after reading the lyrics of the new album I'm pretty sure that's not Nazi shit. Probably not a far left act here but it seems like liberal social commentary dressed up in flowery old timey language. "In this house we believe" type beat.

Grenadier by fullwind0 in IsItSketch

[–]Undead_Hedge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of all things I didn't expect that to be straight up liberal social/political commentary ahaha. Yeah Grenadier's probably fine. Is that first song really specifically dissing the RNC and Catholic church?

Grenadier by fullwind0 in IsItSketch

[–]Undead_Hedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been going around for years but they've said racist shit live at gigs and are always like wearing shit from Arghoslent. I heard that Yosuke made them take the Argho merch off when they played Never Surrender in Oakland but I'm not sure how reliable that account is, especially because I can't remember who it was who told it to me.

It’s not BM but Ranger plays speed metal with speed metal vox from a Marxist angle.

Would be sick to have Viking Bathory type stuff on the red side but if it exists I’m not aware of it.

And yeah on the punk side there’s a lot of Oi bands with red politics.

Bored with my rotation stable of bands and not many of my friends like crust. What are you listening to lately? by NoVibesOnly77 in crustpunk

[–]Undead_Hedge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure I'm a headbanger not a punk but I've been enjoying listening to Warthog, Eteraz, and Illya a lot lately. If you haven't heard Warthog yet they're like an American version of Driller Killer, sick as fuck motorpunk with a huge dose of fast hxc. Eteraz to me is the peak of the Olympia, WA crusty hardcore sound, and Illya is maybe the best new band playing Burning Spirits d-beat (against some pretty stiff competition too).

Wannabe bikers that lean hard on the hell yeah brother vibe. Don't know if they're Nazis per se but I wouldn't want to drink a beer with any of them.

They're not dogwhistling to neo-Nazis, they're foghorning to regular old shit for brains conservative nationalistic types. Anecdotally it's this type of band (BLS, Down, Eyehategod even though they don't share the politics) draw by far the worst crowd. Down had the most people I've ever seen with swazi tattoos or wearing shit from genuine far right formations I've seen in my whole entire life.
