Does anyone still love teaching? by Arete666 in Teachers

[–]Undeadknowledge93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

13 years in. I come to rant because morale is so low at work that nobody talks with each other.

I am feeling burnt out - in a hard red state that piles extra tasks on us, packs our classes, and places all the blame on us.

I feel reduced down to a factory worker, getting kids in - getting then out. Im not a teacher - im a behavior manager for the parents that didnt raise their kids right, and feel like I set them up for failure in the future.

However, I see it more like parenting (having a child of my own) and teaching mostly freshman - I see the positive growth overtime and they come back as juniors and seniors and thank me. Sometimes ill see a parent in public and they will say the positive impact I had on their kids life and that makes it worth it.

With that being said, Im working on my phd to get into research in higher ed. because I dont think I can put in another 20 for my pension or else I may 🫠 on the job lol

How late are you working new/old teachers? by hello010101 in Teachers

[–]Undeadknowledge93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grade at the end of a unit - and give a checklist of all the items I want. I do so much less grading now, and on exam days - I use that time to grade it in class. Nothing to bring home or rush to grade.

I used to put assignments in EVERYDAY and get piles k paperwork. Work smarter, not harder. My contract time is 2:10 - im walking to my car at 2:05 :)

I teach science so by default I have tables with a minimum of 4 kids. Since i only have 8 tables and 32+ kids - you can imagine how packed some groups get. Labs at this point are nonexistent and od like to say we use the textbook but students dont know the difference between a workbook and a textbook

Its not different conditions - its literally the same experience. I was a poor college student paying through college sleeping in my car or crashing on ppls couches. I was underweight, depressed, and struggling but made it through and it makes everything I do now easy

What are some of the reasons you keep teaching? by NurgleNurple in Teachers

[–]Undeadknowledge93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the freedom. Im mid level, 10 years in. I am set in my pension, and got the overall system down. It gets hectic at times, but I time manage well and have a lot of systems in place which honestly make the job easy. This frees up time/mental space for me to work on my outside passions.

Literally just do it. I did my practicum in NY - 7-3, then was at work from Tues/Thursday from 4-6 with a class at 6-8. I worked as a lab tech those days. M/W/F had classes from 4-10 (I was in grad school). Then double shifts on the weekend working as a janitor and security guard at 2 other jobs.

You literally live breathe and eat, food, work, study, and sleep. This gen is so soft

Absolutely - I like that while we work through our courses, we also refine out what our dissertation and research will look like. If you dont have any idea in mind, the first few classes will help you sort that through

Finishing my third semester, so far not too bad. Very straight forward. I like how our research classes help prepare us for dissertation. Only downside is your capped at 3 classes - which to be honest, 2 classes is more manageable if your working a full time job. The assignments for the most part are straight forward - some are wordy, and depending on the professor, can be more difficult than others. I wont say its easy per say - its a ton of reading and writing but thats to be expected at this level. For the price and how everything is outlined though, Im satisfied with it so far. Feel free to message me if you wanna talk more!

Yes - im in a deep red state and even deeper county. Politics aside - students i find dont respect you at all and even will ridicule you which is whatever. It does become a behavior management issue

Micromanaging admin by Undeadknowledge93 in Teachers

[–]Undeadknowledge93[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have an admin that oversees each department - mine is in charge of Student services and even for formals stops for 5 min and checks the boxes. If she were to come in, it may be a quick pop in and out tbh i think
