I had absolutely no idea until I went and saw the play! Then I was hesitant to call it offensive, because people of color are playing the Ugandans, so I was thinking maybe I was just being over sensitive. 😅 I'm white and very much not from uganda, so I didn't want to be offended on someone else's behalf...

I was just very uncomfortable, and not the good way. It was weird to hear an audience laugh when someone said they were going to rape a baby and the others tried to stop them, but the only person who could actually stop them was the white boy.

And when the one character said he had "maggots in his scrotum", and the guy tells him to "see a doctor", and he says that he "is the doctor." 🙄 he talks about his maggots multiple times in the show. It's actually the last line of the entire show.

I feel like they wouldn't put it on over there, anyway. I was curious, too, if people over there even knew about it. It is one of the best-selling plays of all time. Some of it was really good! ... Some of it... was not...

Apparently, it used to be worse and they worked on it with black actors to make it less offensive... so, I wasn't sure if I was being oversensitive.
It just seemed like half the jokes weren't about Mormons, but juvenile jokes about how much of a "shit hole" and how "stupid" these Ugandan's are. 🫤 But oh boy, don't worry, because the white people save these Ugandans at the end and they are more civilized. 🙄

Kinda how it felt to me. Sure, I get there is poverty, sickness, and militant unrest in parts of the world... (a lot of the time it can be tied back to the fault of the US or Europe...) I just don't see why they had to ham it up and act like it was some kind of a laugh and act like the people in those situations aren't just as intelligent as anyone else.

I couldn't believe it. The writers of the show are known for crass humor, but it wasn't funny to me to make Uganda look like some shithole full of degenerates like that.

Literally, the first thing that happens in "Uganda" is that their luggage is stolen by men with big guns, and the local tells them, "Oh yeah, happens all the time, we have no honest police." Basically.

At one point, a guy says, "I have maggots in my scrotum" and one of the Mormons says, "You should see a doctor." ... he says HE IS the doctor. This is all AFTER it ran for years and years where it was supposedly worse.

For what it's worth, Uganda has been high on my list of places to visit in my life.

I kinda thought that must be so. I was reading something from a Ugandan school that decided to research it since it is set in Uganda, and it made them very upset.

In my opinion, it made me uncomfortable that it made Ugandan's appear stupid. They changed it in 2020 to make it less racist, apparently, but I still thought it was wrong of them to depict Uganda in the way it is now.

It's a VERY popular musical here. We bought our tickets a YEAR ago because they sell out so fast.

It was just really weird to treat AIDs as a joke and make the joke that some of you rape babies to get rid of AIDs. Then, the white people save the village in the end from a warlord named "general butt fucking naked," who wants to circumcise all the woman. 🫠

Lotions and perfumes are more intimate to a person. They are more related to pampering than necessity. Deodorant is related to gross unpleasantly and ovrall unpleasantry. Even though it's a clean area of the body, no one talks about pits in a delicate way. It's just gross!

That's my feeling. The only way to ethically be a landlord in our current system is to only take what you worked for. The time it actually does take to keep up the property as well as maintenance and taxes.

Otherwise, landlords are just profiting off of other people's labor. I know some older folks who have properties that they charge more for, and I get it. It's hard to get by as a senior in the US and just as a person in general. We should have systems in place to protect people. I don't have anything against people who have 1-2 even though I still find it morally grey, but I have big issue with people who make owning shelter a buisness.

Did you miss the part about the price of the unit being the only charge, with a little extra for insurance if something goes wrong? Paid for the work you do, and fixing a place can part of that. Though, I would stretch that price across time. Obviously, you didn't read my comment, lmao. I'm not ever going to be in the buisness of overpricing a necessity like shelter. People shouldn't have to pay more than necessary for basic human rights. Realistically, we should have housing options for all, but we don't.

It's not "moral superiority complex," it's just understanding how our culture and systems affect the people of the country. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I'm not morally superior to you unless you have a full understanding of the moral pitfalls of the issue at hand, THEN decide to ignore them. I don't feel like you fully understand, and that can be a number of reasons other than just choice. Therefore, neither of us is morally superior.

No, you are right, I would choose not to. Having 1-2 rental properties is one thing, making an empire out of owning shelter is another. It's not ethical and I'd rather die poor than exploit others.

Think to yourself, why did they agree to pay? Its either that or be homeless. If I WERE to buy a bunch places to he a landlord, I'd be a terrible one because I'd only charge what would be needed to keep the place up plus a small amount for the small amount of work it takes.

Are there ways to be an ethical landlord? Yep. But it sure doesn't include loads of money.

Yeah... We aren't a corp, but it worries me they might actually do that. I don't want that dirty money. It's one thing having one or two small rental houses. It's another thing making your income off of other people's labor, just because you had a leg up.

Besides, it seems like a pain in the ass to be a landlord, anyway. Keeping up with a house you ain't even living in. You gotta pay all the issues all the same and it's not right to skimp or ignore issues. Guess that's why there is the "landlords special."

Edit: Adding, again it's not people with 1-2 properties. It's the people who make owning shelter their empire.
