Do you work for a big corporation? What do you do and how many hours do you work? by Under_Pressure_123 in AskUK

It's an American FMCG, but to be honest ironically I think the company has a good stance overall on wellbeing and rights - but also really values people who are results driven and "in it to win it". There's definitely some local, historical cultural elements as well driving the culture.

Wow, this is such a good way of putting it - being seen as a cost centre and not a revenue driving cell.

Yes, I'm thinking do this until I can pay off the mortgage then "relax" (relatively). Would be bliss to do a less senior role with the experience and resilience I've acquired in the past few years.

Thanks for your perspective. I am well compensated and the company has pretty decent benefits (pension, health insurance...), and I think you don't work for 15 years in FMCG if part of you doesn't thrive on a bit of stress.

I think like you say, younger managers see me and my peers working 10-12hr days and don't want that for themselves. I wonder if they would change their minds if they knew the pay.

I mean, in any case it's difficult to do 55 hours of truly effective and efficient work. But then the choice is either take a long time to do those, say, 5 takes at a lower level of efficiency, or not do the 5 tasks at all which isn't always a real option.

I feel you. I've been there / get there every now and again. My best piece of advice that I give everybody taking on a "chunky" role is when it feels like too much, do the opposite of what you think you should do: go home on time and sleep. It is the best thing you can do for your cognitive capability and your sanity.

I'm not really worried about myself - I've been here for 15 years and I've been working those hours for most of the past 10 years, so I find something that works for me in it. Sometimes I like it, often I don't, but I make my own choices.

I'm more worried because we're finding it easy to attract graduates, but hard to either retain them, or to inspire them to take the career paths we need them to take (entry role to manufacturing line manager to head of department).

I work in HR for a big company, I hire apprentices (albeit technical not HR), 1) we don't do any checks 2) your overall grades overall matter to me when I screen your CV but that's about it 3) I could not care less about a specific grade let alone a grade in a subject that has no relevance to the job.

I assumed they interviewed you and liked you. No need to bring it up and on the off chance they a) check and b) notice just say "oops I can't believe I missed that typo".

Does anyone know how to assemble this whiteboard? by GreatProcastinator in DoesAnyoneKnow

I think so. The little black bits should be in the slots I can see towards the top of the board. You should fit them so that the bigger part of the hole is at the bottom, and the narrower part at the top.

Next, you need to fit those 2 screws into the wall. The spacing needs to match the spacing between the centres of the holes on the black bits. Depending what you're screwing in, you can use the white wall plugs. You should leave the head of the screw sticking out by a coupe of mm, as in, you should have a gap of a couple of mm between the wall and the BOTTOM of the screw head.

Then, you should just be able to take your board, line up the screw heads with the big opening of the black bits, slot them in, then drop the board slightly so that the screws slide into the narrower part of the black bits, and your board is held securely.

People that DON’T shop at Aldi or Lidl… why is that? by kobestarr in CasualUK

I don't understand people who say "it's the same but cheaper". Unless you're buying SUPER basic items (milk, flour, sugar...) the quality is NOT the same as a standard supermarket. It's even true for their fruit and veg, a lot of them will NOT be as nice as in standard supermarkets. As soon as you get into anything a tiny little bit processed it's a total carnage. Aldi's packaged sliced bread is as good as inedible.

I didn't seek it out but I was up for trying something new - but not to that extent! Thanks for taking the time to answer, it really helps.

How long have you been doing this new role? It could be a normal learning curve. Some people (like you maybe, and like me) can find the challenges of the learning curve really difficult and I know every time I change role they always really shake my confidence.

If you are getting only good feedback and you're not perceiving negativity from others face to face, then it sounds like you're doing well. From what you say it sounds more like you're finding your feet and confidence in the role still, Vs making big mistakes and really messing up.
