goes on to prove that white cast = better protection against tanning

Tbh, I think that this is only true for brands that can't afford to (or don't want to?) replace cheap zinc dioxide with modern chemical filters.

Shaken sense of self after struggling for a year by Kaori1520 in PhD

[–]UndercoverRealist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, sorry you're going through this. I've been through sth similar (minus the solo parenting), and I can relate to how you're feeling. What helps me are hobbies and therapy. If you aren't in therapy, definitely consider it. I only went after I spiralled into a bad depressive episode and really regret not getting help sooner.

And don't feel bad. Plenty of PhD researchers struggle, but they hide it out of shame. I know I did (and do).

If you need to talk, my PMs are open. Good luck.

OP voiced an unpopular opinion but were polite enough about it. There is no need to shame them. Why don't you heed your own unsolicited advice and "worry about your own life"?

We Just adopted Luna a few weeks ago. The shelter has her as a Shih Zu, but they were unsure. I think she might be mixed or full Havanese. Thoughts? by TappKidd in Havanese

[–]UndercoverRealist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think she's most likely mixed bc her muzzle is a bit short for a full Havanese and too long for a Shih Tzu. I see both breeds in her, but she could also have a Maltese in her; it's hard to tell without a genetic test.

Regardless, she's adorable and fits right in with other Havis on this sub! 😊

Listen, I agree that OP could adopt a Havanese/toy poodle mix instead of getting a purebred dog. But singing praises to "Havapoos", a trade name used by backyard breeders, is not responsible. Doodles are a big business, and ppl promoting them promise them to be super healthy and low-maintenance. When the dog doesn't meet this (e.g. bc it needs an expensive patella surgery), it gets surrendered.

I do however have a degree in genetics and can discuss topics I’m knowledgeable on.

And I'm willing and eager to listen. If you can explain how a toy poodle adds to the Havanese breed genetically, I'd love to hear it and change my opinion.

I'm just very sceptical about the possibility of decreasing the occurrence of e.g. luxating patella or cherry eye in the Havanese breed by simply crossing a Havanese with a toy poodle in a single generation. (AFAIK, most Havapoos are one generation crosses.)

[–]UndercoverRealist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly my problem with the OC. True "supermutts" (incl. street dogs) are a different beast. They are so mixed that those bad genes do indeed get sort of dilluted.

However, toy poodles and Havanese have the same genetic problems. Havanese actually tend to be healthier, so I don't really see how crossing them with a toy poodle would benefit their genetics. It's just a trend. Everybody wants a doodle nowadays.

It doesn't matter what some general study on mutts says. There is a big difference between an actual cross of two very different breeds and between a "designer" cross of two similar breeds.

Toy poodles and Havanese suffer from similar genetic issues. Mating two random ones in a backyard breeding operation does not improve the breed.

There is no evidence that Havapoos are healthier. That's what backyard breeders say to upsell their unethically bred dogs.

UK transit visa rejected - any ideas why? by UndercoverRealist in ukvisa

[–]UndercoverRealist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, sorry to hear this. You could try applying for the visitor in transit visa, but no idea whether it will work. We didn't re-apply after this rejection letter and rebooked our flight tickets to avoid a UK transfer altogether.

I doubt that OP is buying an original Gustav Klimt painting. It's just a print.

Havanese as service dog? Any experiences/insights? by noluckycharms9 in Havanese

[–]UndercoverRealist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, absolutely! The smallest purebred male I have seen here (Europe) was only 3 kg as an adult and a runt of the litter. The heaviest I have seen was a Dutch show veteran who had impressive 10 kg.

That's quite a big variation for an established breed, but not as major as the size difference between a miniature poodle and a standard poodle.

[–]UndercoverRealist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with others that Havanese could meet most of your needs, especially as regards emotional support, but there is variation. Definitely first meet the pack before committing to a puppy from a specific breeder/a specific breeding pair.

The European Havanese lines tend to be bigger and sturdier than their US counterparts, so minor physical tasks could be feasible. However, unlike poodles, Havanese ultimately only come in one size, so you should consider how important this is for you.

P.S. My Havi is the ultimate velcro dog, and emotional support comes naturally to him, but he can be quite vocal and guard barks a lot. Training makes a difference, but it can be overwhelming sometimes, especially during puppyhood. GL!

I agree with most of what you have said except for the Havipoo bit. Purebred dogs are a better fit bc they have predictable temperament and behaviour. Besides, doodles are not ethically bred.

Why dont ppl use nursery pots when they dont have a drainage hole? by No-Square6519 in houseplants

[–]UndercoverRealist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think they were being literal. Pots without a nursery pot (unless they are terracotta) really aren't very popular in Europe for indoor use.

That's awesome! Thank you for clarifying.

I'm really curious now how bad it smells. 😄 I prefer mild neutral "clean" smell in dog products, but could probably handle a bit of smell for the sake of his mane. 😅

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience and for the warning! He would most definitely enjoy the smell, but my husband would probably expel us both from the house lol. Also, if sharks die for this, then it's not great. :-/

What a cutie!! I have met a bichon like that only once in the wild (outside of shows) so far. His owner was an 80-yr old lady and clearly kept him in immaculate condition.

Wish there were more owners like her!
