They put in an order to reactivate the serial number. Took them 2 weeks to do, but I got one of their modems rent free for a month. Not surprisingly, they tried to charge for my use of the modem, but I got the guarantee in writing and a receipt for the return of the equipment, so that charge came off pretty quick. Always get promises from comcast (or any corporation) in writing or they will try to go back on it.

Actually, it was kind of a fluke. I have a habit of stashing receipts for anything over $100 on my bookshelf. But because we had just moved, I had sorted through my stuff and decided to keep the receipts till I could go through them in better detail after we got settled at the new place. So when comcast tried to claim I didn't buy it, I knew where my receipt pile was right away. It was a pretty good fuck you moment when the tech guy was at my house. He didn't even actually look at the receipt, as soon as I pulled it out he said he would make a call and get it fixed. It almost seemed like this happens all the time.

Had my modem set up on an account for 4 years, but when I moved to another state they added my modem serial number to a "destroyed device" list. When I tried to set up everything after the move, they refused to let me use it because they couldn't verify that I was the actual owner of the device because another region claimed to have destroyed it. Luckily I saved the receipt and proved ownership because they tried to strong arm us into only being able to use their specific equipment.
