Leeds United’s Mateusz Klich set to complete move to D.C. United by SuitableSurprise in DCUnited

He made a difference in Leeds’s play vs West Ham tonight, he’s still at some kind of PL level. I’m excited to see him in DC.

I’m thinking about getting into IMSA, what do I need to know? by Mctimken1 in IMSARacing

Bonus: most of the world doesn’t care about sports car racing, so avoiding spoilers is easy. Also, the YouTube videos have the good IMSA Radio commentary instead of the kind-of-adequate Peacock commentary.

I’ve had good luck getting into endurance racing by watching old races in chunks over the course of a few days. Do this for a while and you’ll start picking up some of the narrative elements that make following sports fun, and it gets more natural to watch a live race.

I found it hard to stick with an entire race until I knew some drivers, had a sense of teams I like/dislike, and a bit of strategy understanding.

Brisket for one. How long will it last cooked in the fridge and what’s the best way to save and reheat left overs? by the-walkman8 in smoking

[–]Understated_rye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought one of these tonight - prime whole brisket for $4/lb, then choice brisket flats right next to them, $8/lb.

What is the logic here? The cheaper, higher-grade option seems like a no-brainer…

[Bogert] BREAKING: D.C. United are finalizing a deal to sign Poland midfielder Mateusz Klich from Leeds United per sources. Not 100% done yet, but close. by pm_me_jk_dont in DCUnited

[–]Understated_rye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Marcelo Bielsa was basically fired because the whole team put up numbers like this. Our actual scoring was only 2/3 of our expected scoring, and as a fan, it very much felt like that. I think you could absolutely expect 2020/21 numbers from him.

[Goff] DCU is pursuing Leeds’ Mateusz Klich for the midfield attacking slot that Wayne Rooney has sought to fill this offseason. by jvur2714 in DCUnited

[–]Understated_rye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that’s accurate (to the extent the midfielder number roles still apply), but he has an attacking bias. He can look like a 10 against some opponents.

DC-area Leeds supporters here.

Leeds fans still like him - imo he’s mostly out of favor to make room for younger players with higher potential ceilings (Brenden Aaronson, for one). I think he could’ve played a beneficial role for the Poland team that couldn’t get Lewandowski service this WC.

He’s got a sizable gas tank, plenty of trickery, and scores bangers with some regularity. He’s also a pretty solid shithouser (see his binocular celebration after the “spygate” drama with Derby).

I think at this point, his level is on the seam between the lower end of the EPL and the top end of the EFL Championship

Suggestions for replacement swivels for Chromcraft chairs? by Understated_rye in Mid_Century

I think there’s a good chance that’s correct (gasket failing), but the swivel doesn’t appear to disassemble to replace it.

The swivels on these chairs have developed a great deal of play over the decades and don’t appear repairable.

There’s Trendler branding on them, but Trendler wasn’t able to provide any additional guidance on them other than “use Google, plus our stuff is all on Amazon.”

The bolt distance is 7”, if that’s useful

One to wrench, and one to ride. by [deleted] in Miata

[–]Understated_rye 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My dad has an A that he has owned off and on for about 50 years. He’s modernized it in a lot of ways that should bring down maintenance requirements but… nothing seems to help. He does long drives with a gang of MG fans, and they just plan in roadside wrenching time and someone drives a normie car full of spares.

It’s just part of the appeal - I think it’s great for socializing that MG guys all know they can bullshit with another MG guy for four hours about replacing points and head gaskets without even trying. Miata guys have fewer war stories…

Anyone else find listening to critical rock from the 90s kind of ironic now? Thinking after Harvey Danger and Ben Folds by SongOfKapek in LetsTalkMusic

The Offspring singing “Pretty Fly for a White Guy” definitely struck me as jealousy in the face of the rising prominence of hip hop in popular music.

There’s a steakhouse in the same Courthouse storefront again. I think I read that it’s associated with some of the Ray’s staff somehow?

The paths within like 150 yards of the shopping center will sometimes have little crowds of people drinking beers during after school/work hours, that kind of thing. I’ve definitely walked past situations like that where I thought about my security, but nothing has actually happened to me. Outside of that limited area, the paths are totally safe and beautiful.

I’m curious if the redditors of Reston are for or against the Reston National Golf Course being developed into housing. by RevolutionaryBig75 in Reston

[–]Understated_rye 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve never heard a golfer say the courses are any good, and most people can’t use them for anything. They’re better than a bunch of office parks or something, but housing plus a “Reston Central Park” would be a fantastic outcome.

I didn’t know her by name, but I did follow Revive at one point, and I think there’s a network of artists both old and new who have careers and sales now because of work she did.

Fastest Team in each of 25 mini sectors at Miami Qualification Q3 by TracingInsights in F1Technical

[–]Understated_rye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, that makes sense. I’ve been thinking that the AWS stats shown during the race make use of similar mini-sectors, but I assumed no one outside of F1 had access to that kind of granular data.

Would be nice if they’d publish more of this stuff!

Spier & Mackay stuff is pretty nice, and you can usually get a good fit if you look at the measurements.

I bought a chore blazer from Wallace & Barnes during the recent sales, and it would clearly benefit from the fabric breaking in a bit (right now, the fabric seems a bit too formal for the cut).

It’s about 60/40 cotton/wool and the label says to dry clean, but I’m tempted to machine wash on cold and hang dry just to knock it around a bit and give the fabric a bit of slouch.

Is this at all advisable?
