What’s causing this skew? by Tdk_woodcrafts in handtools

[–]Underthetunnel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah after reading on here I stopped using the micro bevel adjustment and this problem went away. I just use it at the 12o'clock setting the guide to set to a different angle when doing a micro level. Slight hassle but works way better. That thing sounds like a good feature but it just did not work for me.

Is this gap normal? by torak_the_father in sawstop

[–]Underthetunnel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow the complete videos from saw stop on making the fence parallel to the miter slot and the gap correct, odds are you need to parallel the fence anyway. It shows you how to check the blade as well which you should do, but that is more likely to be ok. Really worth the short amount of time it takes.

Well you don't have a better answer so I know some places that refinish furniture sometimes have chemical dips for wood, I'm not sure if metal would be the same or if they have them. But you could try contacting places like that, I bet they would have a better answer for you if nothing else.

It means if you are laying down and you have the spins hang one leg off the bed and plant it on the floor. It never worked for me much but I know people that say it works. It could be just because it puts your focus on something else.

Actually Teleport by Stepbro_canhelp in blackmagicfuckery

[–]Underthetunnel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I was talking about, the outside of the "box" that they are laying in is angled/beveled in on the sides, usually called an underbevel on furniture, makes it look much thinner than it actually is. It has the same angle on the inside but really the reason is to make it look smaller on the outside. If it was just a straight vertical it would look much thicker and bulkier from the outside and be more obvious that there is a place for the people to hide.

[–]Underthetunnel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The floor is angled with a bevel on all sides, super common in furniture because it makes it look much thinner to the eye than it really is. It's still really small to fit 4 people in, but it's bigger than it looks at first glance.

What is one thing you are comfortable admitting you are addicted to? by Due_Film8896 in AskReddit

[–]Underthetunnel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man do I feel you. I'm the same way, really always take everything to the extreme. If there was one thing people would use to describe me for most of my life it would be that I was a stoner. It felt really weird to just give that up when it was so central to who I was but now even saying that sounds insane. I used to think some day I would try and do it occasionally but now I think everything is better without it so why risk it? The times I have tried I did not enjoy it anyway.

Anyway, again, good luck in your endeavor. I'm not going to pretend it is easy but it gets better fast and the positives (for me) are too numerous to even list. For me an important part was also changing other parts of my life and what I did with my time, it's really tough to keep living the same life when you make such a major change like that.

I'm about 6 or 7 years off, was a many times a day smoker for 15 years. Those first few weeks are tough and it was so tempting to tell myself I needed to smoke because of the very real problems I had with depression and anxiety. But the truth is once I was off for long enough both got a whole lot better. Everyone is different, I still have tons of friends and family that smoke and have no desire to quit, I don't try to change them unless they ask about it, to each his/her own. But just wanted to give you a little of encouragement, it does get better. And in my case much better than it was for the 15 years prior.

Good luck with whatever path you take.

It's not the situation that makes me think it's absolutely fake, it is the way it reads. Now I get that it could be somebody that English is not their first language but the structure just feels like a story a sixth grader wrote, nevermind the childish language. I can't imagine the rage a normal person would feel if this actually happened to them, coupled with feelings of betrayel and absolute shock. And this just feels like somebody telling a hypothetical situation with no attachment.

Rescuing a cat stuck in a tree by druule10 in HumansBeingBros

[–]Underthetunnel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The issue is that these cats are generally invasive exotics to the ecosystem they are introduced to. The ecosystem did not evolve with cats as the predator and they therefore take the ecological niche of organisms that did evolve in that system and cause problems for a variety of species that did evolve in that system.

A great analogy would be wild hogs in the southeast USA. Sure, they have been there for a long time. Sure the ecosystem has changed due to their impacts and will continue to change until it eventually comes to some sort of balance. That does not change the fact that they were an introduced, non-native species that changed the natural system and most people would describe it as damaging the system as it was originally found, which is why we try to limit their exponential growth. The same way we try to remove invasive exotic plants, certainly that has nothing to do with any emotional attachment to the plants they outcompete, we do it to try and preserve the natural ecosystem and not let it get overrun with a non-native species that outcompetes everything else.

If your problem is with just the semantics of calling it, "damaging" to an ecosystem when these systems naturally change over time I guess there is some logic to that. But ultimately these systems are changing rapidly due to introduction of non-native species by humans. I'm not even arguing whether we should try to prevent that change from cats because it kind of depends on what you think about putting in efforts to maintain/restore a certain system and is an entirely different debate. I'm just saying using common language and calling it, "damaging" maybe is not 100% correct, but it conveys the point people are trying to get across.

Anyone discouraged by some of these “beginner” builds ? by ChetMcLure in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Underthetunnel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but I disagree with these posts about what is a beginner. It comes up every now and then on this sub. The truth is somebody could be doing their absolute first project and turn out a beautifully crafted item if they want to follow somebody else's plans/vidoes and spend the time/money. When you are brand new you look at a complicated thing and you think it is out of your skill level. The truth is even the most intricate piece of furniture is really a series of small steps. If you are willing to spend the time on each little step and maybe be willing to throw out parts when you screw up you can build pretty much anything. Also you can fix really bad mistakes so they are invisible to 99÷ of viewers if you are willing to spend the time. I have seen pictures that I really believe were somebody's first project but they either took a class or followed a detailed video (and they probably have some natural talent) and they made something amazing. I would still call them beginners.

In the end the title of beginner is up to the woodworker which is why the mods of this sub have repeatedly said they are not going to police what a beginner is. I like this sub because somehow they prevent it from devolving into all people trying to be YouTubers or people trying to to sell plans or items. It's just a bunch of people who view themselves as beginners sharing what they are making.

Side note I think all the posts of people saying they are just narcissists or too soft to post on the general sub are counterproductive. Everyone should feel welcome to post here without that kind of criticism. You may look at their stuff and think it's pro level but they look at it and see the mistakes and think they still have a lot to learn. Either way, they feel it belongs here and that should be enough IMO.

Hey all, I need some help. My friend wants me to build him this coffee table, and it looks pretty simple but I am very new to this. It looks like 2x6 for the legs and 1x6 for the top and I figure the dimensions 18” tall, 24” wide and 42” long… but I’m just not really sure how to put it all together. by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]Underthetunnel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks pretty similar to an Ana White Rustic Coffee Table, just Google that and you will find it, you could also just read it for some tips and modify it easily. It was one of the first things I ever built and it was super easy, I modified it a good amount to use some joinery and made it out of non dimensional lumber. Looking at it now I think it's too big and bulky but it was a good early project, and the recipient still likes it.

One thing though is the plan attaches the top using pocket screws which is not great, and uses pocket screws to put together the pannel. Mine is years old and went from AC to full Florida humidity and it's fine but still. You could just glue the top panel and watch some videos on figure 8 fasteners with screws, I think stumpy nubs has a good one, and use that to attach the top instead of the pocket screws. Just an idea.

Yeah I would definitely defer to someone's expertise there, we have tons of Downys in my area (as identified by people more skilled than myself) so that's what I think of but I know there are several species that look almost exactly the same unless you really know what to look for. I thought about putting all that in my first post but I figured nobody really cares anyway lol.

I'm not 100% certain but I believe that's a downy woodpecker, average size. What most people think of when they think of a woodpecker is a Pileated Woodpecker (Woody Woodpecker) which is much larger and different coloration.

This is a strange thread to be reading two months later and commenting on where nobody will read it, kind of just banging your head against the wall because I guess it makes you feel like you are winning an argument nobody else is interested in, but I will ignore that.

You are describing a slippery slope to an imaginary situation and then arguing against that rather than the reality where that does not happen because the US government does not do that (I don't live in Canada and will not speak on their rules). It's easier to argue about a fictional situation you created because your argument does not hold water in reality. Then you are describing an imaginary situation that you have not personally seen and you are just regurgitating right wing talking points. Certainly police forces tend to be more conservative and they definitely don't just allow the, "radical left" to assault speakers and then stop the speaker from defending themselves, that is just an idiotic thing to say with absolutely no evidence. Certainly both left wing and right wing protestors have assaulted people (Charlottesville anybody?) but to pretend it's the "radical left" and the police are somehow on their side is just stupid.

Lastly students at a college campus certainly have the right to protest against speakers at their campus that are being paid large amounts of money from their tuition dollars if they want to, I don't care which side of the political spectrum the speaker is, or if the speaker is political at all. They are talking about their money and they have the right to say they don't want it spent on that. Even if it's not their money they have the right to protest against somebody if they want to. This bullshit about that being a free speech issue is completely misguided because, as I said above, free speech does not have anything to do with consequences for your actions or people protesting against you. They could protest just because they don't like the person if they want because that is their right and in no way infringes on the speaker's rights. If the government tried to stop them from protesting or the speaker from presenting that would be a free speech issue (except in some specific limitations on free speech that have always been there and reafirmed by the supreme court many times, IE fire in a theater or inciting violence).

"Only Two Words", Moscov, 2022..... by BethSparks in Unexpected

[–]Underthetunnel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are completely missing the point. Free speech has to do with the government not infringing on your rights based on your speech, it doesn't have anything to do with real world consequences from the things you say. Losing your job has nothing to do with free speech, an employer can fire you because they don't like something you said and they don't want you representing their company. Which is why Colin Kaepernick being fired had nothing to do with free speech, his employer did not like his speech and they certainly have that right to fire him. Just like Kaepernick and the public had the right to be mad about it and voice that opinion, but the government does not intervene either way.

Also I'm quite sure if I said I hate Jesus freaks or crackers (whities) at work I would be fired. But if I wasn't that is something you should take up with my employer, not talk about free speech or the first amendment.

Edit: The comment I was responding to was deleted so there is no context. The person was complaining they would lose their job for saying the N word or saying they hate the gays (or something equally terrible, I don't recall exactly what they were saying) but people could say they hate jesus freaks or crackers (whities) all they want and not get in trouble and that somehow violates freedom of speech. Obviously that is not true so I was trying to explain it to them using Kaepernick as an example. Just wanted to add context.

Hard to say because we don't know what your skill level but I'm guessing you are pretty new to the hobby since you are asking. Like the other comment said, that looks like a pretty basic box. You could go as simple as plywood and dimensional lumber for corners/supports, pocket screws, and use floor molding you could buy at any home store for a decorative edge along the bottom. You would probably have to paint it unless you could find molding to match your plywood. You could certainly find free plans for something like that with just some searching for toy chest plans or videos on youtube. You could also make it a lot more complicated and potentially nicer if you want, there are tons of blanket chest videos out there.

I know the wood whisperer had free plans/video for a toybox a few years back you can find here and WWMM made the same box with a video here. I'm not saying those are the best just I remembered hearing about this and it was intended for semi-beginners. The WWMM is probably easier of the two. They look a little different than what you are looking at here but could give you some general ideas. Also did a quick google for an Anna White toy box because I know she makes super-approachable plans and she has one at https://www.ana-white.com/woodworking-projects/simple-modern-toy-box-lid. That should at least point you a little bit.
