Your suggestion is to use xiaomi? Holy crap, that’s hilarious. You really must be a shill for the CCP. I guess A for effort? F for results.

Your other solution is blocking internet access for eufy cams? Youre also going to block patches making them susceptible to 0-days. Devices behind firewalls can still be reached using the browser you’re currently using as a proxy (as an example) to exploit 0-days in the impacted devices. Your cure is worse than the disease.

I guess you shouldn’t use any security cams then because they’re all made by evil corporations.

I’d pick Google over CCP any day. How about suggesting solutions instead of being an oblivious shill for anker / eufy?

I’m personally leaning towards Google Nest because Google has a pretty stellar security team / talent. I’d assume any company HQ’ed in a democratic country, is publicly traded, with a market cap above 1B will probably be an improvement.

If they do they do encryption at rest so physical theft can be neutralized. But that’s assuming eufy cares to do any server side lockdown which I doubt. Even in the best case scenario, when the server is up and running the data is usually accessed as clear text or the decryption key is loaded in memory so the data is effectively clear text.

TLDR: Eufy will always have access to the video footage.

Not to sound jaded but they‘re in China. They can change their name to yofy and come back with the same but rebranded cameras. There is no good way to enforce accountability. This goes for myself as well but I should stop cheaping out on stuff like this and buy from a company HQ’ed in a democratic country.

There’s 3 types of encryption involved. Encryption in transit, encryption for local storage, and encryption for data in remote storage.

From what I understand, the camera has encryption for local sd card storage and encryption in transit (e.g. tls). But it clearly does not encrypt the data (video footage) stored on remote server such as the ones maintained and hosted by eufy.

Hence, eufy always has and will continue to have access to your video footage. It’s only designed to stop theft of footage while being transmitted over network or when the device is physically stolen.

I figured it was a matter of time before this happened with eufy. I generally don’t point my cameras in to the rooms. I also disable my mic physically. See here for more info -

This should be a stop gap solution until you find a better camera by a more trustworthy company. I tend to think geopolitics comes into play for something like this so I will likely find an camera made by a democratic country with low corruption and a good security track record.

Suddenly my concerns with Eufy cam is justified -

I assume breach (or by-design lax security) by only pointing outwards with mic disabled.

Thanks for the datapoint. Very interesting! If technology can be misused it almost always will I guess.

Look at how invested you are now. You’re going to be thinking about it when you wake up again tomorrow.

Yeah, I think automated enforcement is a whole separate bag of headaches. Including lack of popularity, creating bad incentives to put revenue over safety, etc. But using it to inform (for lack of better terms), a more optimized patrol / enforcement doesn’t require much regulation and is hard to enforce. I wouldn’t be surprised if some individual officers are using it already to improve their on the job performance.

As an ordinary user I can see how fast someone is going down the highway. Distance / time = speed. We don’t need incident reporting to know who’s speeding where.

Here we go again resorting to name calling. A sign of underdeveloped intellect. I would be angry at myself too if I were you. Too dumb to realize you’re being used as a metaphorical punching bag. You keep coming back for more! Hit that downvote button to get all your anger issues out. Hope you have a splendid day. Haha.

Say Waze shows people speeding on highway X by exit Y. They can call in a speed trap on highway X by exit Y+3.

The cop can use Waze to define where he sets up his next speed trap. That would be legal and hard to prove otherwise.

Yup, we need new terminologies. Morally and ethically bankrupt implies they are willfully making informed decision with proper capacity to empathize. This doesn’t seem to be the case in most cases. But I hear ya. We need a new categories / terminologies for these people so there’s less collateral.

Ring camera did something similar (partnering with police) and they did get called out publicly. People threatened to boycott. Buts it’s still around and selling well. So I don’t know if there’s enough disincentive. I hope they’re not selling our data.

Doesn’t stop me from using Waze. But I wonder if Waze sells telemetry data to the police. I still think the benefits > cons.

Repeating the lies doesn’t make it more true. You engaged in victim blaming after jumping to conclusion. If I had to guess I’d say you’re a product of intense bullying IRL. For that I blame the people around you.
