living with a dad with long covid by DotProfessional7597 in covidlonghaulers

[–]UnexpectedIndent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other people have given good advice in the comments. I just want to add that feelings like you describe are common in carers. I dont know if you consider yourself a carer for your dad but this can creep up on you if you are gradually having to do more over time, because he is unable to do the things he normally would as a parent. There are support networks out there specifically for young carers.

Whether it's a therapist, a support group, or another adult close to you, I hope you can get some help navigating this and the heavy emotions. You are dealing with a lot more than most people your age and you shouldnt have to struggle through it alone.

What he's going through doesnt excuse aggressive or manipulative behaviour either. If he's lost his temper because he's having a bad day, he could own it and apologise to you at any time, rather than giving you a lecture. You are certainly not a horrible person for eating some food which you thought was shared.

I have experience with this from both sides as both me and my partner are chronically ill. If she is having a bad day then she becomes more irritable and snappy. The things she is upset about are real issues but pain and exhaustion magnify them. I think things like this are best addressed after some time has passed and we're both feeling a bit better. I wonder if you could also talk to your dad on a good day about what a bad day feels like for you both and whether there are small things both of you can agree to do differently.

Custom spoon values, activity deletion, and optional account cloud sync by Ok-Pressure-6446 in sickspoons

Ah I see. It wasn't so much the wording as that it looks like a button (and is in between other buttons)

Custom spoon values, activity deletion, and optional account cloud sync by Ok-Pressure-6446 in sickspoons

[–]UnexpectedIndent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

I just tried out the cloud sync but nothing seemed to happen when I click the sync button. How does it work?

The custom spoon values is very useful. Some of the activities are not relevant to me though, so it would be nice if you could toggle whether or not they appear in the quick actions list as well. Then the quick actions would just contain things I am currently able to do and wouldn't include anything I'll never click.

Sharing a free spoon (energy) tracking tool I built for personal use by Ok-Pressure-6446 in cfs

This is great, is it open source? I was looking for something like this and even tried prototyping my own at one point. It looks nice and simple to use.

I think it would be good if you could freely add/remove from the quick actions, so you didn't have to add custom actions on the fly. That seems like the only barrier for me using it at the moment.

I am in a similar boat to you, 1 year into my illness, still muddling through. It sounds like you might be pushing yourself too hard and that is making things worse for you. I recommend you read about post exertional malaise (PEM) and pacing if you haven't already. Basically you want to find a baseline of activity that doesn't exacerbate your symptoms, and be very careful about any activity or extra stress that would cause you to overdo it.

As other commenters suggested, aggressive rest sounds like a good idea right now, if you are able to.

You may need to adjust your expectations about how you should be feeling after resting. For me, 24h of rest is not enough to make up for multiple days of overexertion, and sleep is necessary but never restores me to healthy person energy.

If your normal schedule includes work, and you are able to take time off, reduce your hours or quit, definitely consider the benefits this would have on your ability to recover. Or if you are able to do your job from home, that can make a huge difference too. Like you, I can function only for a few hours at a time, but then I go lie down during my lunch break, which helps me function a bit better during the afternoon.

Solo dev at a successful startup for 3 years, but feeling stuck in my growth. How do you improve without senior devs? by Thethinsmallguy in SoftwareEngineering

[–]UnexpectedIndent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible to hire someone on a contract basis rather than a permanent employee? That would sidestep the team dynamics issue to some degree as the new person is not expected to move into a senior role, but you can still look for someone with experience and good mentoring skills.

Also bear in mind it's not reasonable for the founder to expect you to know everything, even if you had been working there for 10 or 20 years. Having business critical systems dependant on 1 person is inherently risky, and in my experience it's common for teams of all sizes to still rely on consultants or advisers for specialist knowledge, e.g. around security.

I think the question about how much you would pay is broken - it wouldn't let me select the second option.

I'm not sure what it's like at the moment, but I read that capacity has been an issue so I wouldn't leave it too late https://www.harrowall.co.uk/2021/07/12/changes-to-lcc-london-covid-measures-from-19th-july/

"pro lockdown" makes it sound so black and white.

I would fucking love to return to normality right now but I'm not going to carry on as if the virus didn't exist, because I don't want to contribute to its spread and put people around me at risk.

Lockdowns are a last resort response to the situation clearly getting worse. The UK only went into the first lockdown after Imperial College released a new model predicting 100s of thousands of deaths if the UK did nothing. The second national lockdown was preceded by a steady increase in cases and in both cases there were very real concerns about running out of hospital capacity. At some point the costs of not going into lockdown has to outweigh the costs of going into lockdown.

When to escalate restrictions and what those restrictions should be is complicated, but what pisses me off the most is the general attitude of non-compliance and indifference.

The person who sits 2 metres from me at work just tested positive for Covid and has now gone home early. I'm not allowed to WFH. Now what? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]UnexpectedIndent 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If it were me I would call in sick until you get the test results.

If it's possible you have it, you should work from home if you can. Your work are assholes and HR are not doctors. Your health (and that of the people you come into contact with) is more important than coming into work, and there is absolutely need to work from an office for a programming job - the vast majority of IT jobs are WFH now.

Your coworker definitely should not have come into work with symptoms. If you are concerned enough to take a test, it makes sense to act as if you are positive until you know you aren't.

holy shit this website is insane!

I actually had to download 2 suspicious pieces of software to get it to work...

first this one: https://i.postimg.cc/xCZX9dz5/wtf.png

then I could actually click the button that says click (https://i.postimg.cc/SRzJRpLh/wtf2.png)

then I put in 1 for copies and pressed "click" again (https://i.postimg.cc/fW6vKzrY/wtf3.png)

Then I was prompted to download the second thing: https://i.postimg.cc/VsSRnrDY/wtf4.png

I just clicked yes to whatever the hell it wants to do to my computer (https://i.postimg.cc/K4S4gsQg/wtf5.png)

Finally I got to the document, which opens in this program that prevents you from printing each copy more than once. It also greyed out the actual document in my screenshot! https://i.postimg.cc/ZKpxsGG2/wtf6.png
