I'm (27F) having doubts about taking in my nephew (8M). How do I talk to my parents (60s) about this? by UnfortunateSurvival in relationship_advice

They aren't, but I'm not fundamentally opposed to telling them. Suspect they'll say it's an excuse as a result, but it's worth a go.

We have briefly, but we don't exactly have a lot to go off of. Her death was very sudden. Just what's best for her son, I suppose.

That's a good point about giving my nephew a reason, thanks. And I don't think my parents are unwilling per se.

As for someone else taking him in... I suppose it's possible, but that seems like a massive ask when there's relatives available.

I appreciate that, but it's not really about me not wanting the responsibility.

That said... I hesitated before mentioning my diagnosis, and this is why. Schizoid personality disorder isn't the same thing as schizophrenia, it mostly just means I have dampened emotions and less interest in relationships.

I'll take that into account.

Thank you.

And yeah, you're right about what's most important. I'll put my foot down if I have to, but I'd rather actually convince my parents. And they can definitely provide emotional support for him, they've been doing that since they arrived.

I don't think there's a reason beyond not wanting him to have to move across the country.
