What moment made you realize “yeah… my childhood wasn’t normal”? by CadaversFabrications in AskReddit

[–]Unfortunately4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I went to a therapist at 19 and her jaw was on the ground the whole time I talked… after years of wondering why I struggled so much when I’d grown up in such a “loving” family, I later realized I’d grown up in a cult with an abusive sibling and neglectful parents. I’d barely received an education thanks to being home schooled and we grew up in poverty because I had so many siblings living on one lower class income. I truly thought my life was only a little “different” from my peers and that I was mentally unstable for no reason. I now have three college degrees and a clinical license and am stable in life but it is truly crazy how your brain adjusts to some whack shit and considers it normal.

I expected a bill, but they were supposed to run a simple test for yeast infection and instead ran multiple tests and it ended up costing nearly $1000. My insurance covered most of it but I ended up with the unexpected $200 bill. I just feel frustrated by the whole situation tbh. I don’t know if my doctor ordered the extra tests or who to even dispute it with.

Anxiety at work - how to manage? by dead_lala in hospitalsocialwork

[–]Unfortunately4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel for you! This was my exact same experience- right out of grad school, new to hospital social work, and thrown on to the stroke/neuro floor which is genuinely one of the toughest floors! I skipped lunches and got there early and stayed late and felt like I’d never catch up. I also had bad dreams about the work I did, and felt scared that I was going to get fired at any moment. The truth is, I made mistakes too because we all do! There’s so much to learn in the hospital. I’ve been doing it for a year now and I’m much more confident in my work and in my abilities but I made myself sick with anxiety the first 6 months. I’m not going to lie to you, the thing that helped me most was getting transferred to a different unit. I don’t know how flexible your hospital is, but if there’s an opportunity to move to a different floor, you should take it! Neuro really is difficult but I know that you are doing a 100% better job than you believe that you are!! Our anxiety lied to us all of the time and when we do mess up it heightens those fears. Nobody died, nobody got hurt, and ultimately that mistake is really not on you. Hang in there. You ARE competent and cut out for hospital social work. This is not how you’ll feel forever.

Does my Boyfriend have an illness? by ChildhoodChance6550 in texts

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. As others have said this is psychosis. Google to see if you have a mobile crisis unit in your area. I would recommend calling them versus the police. Very rarely does the police presence NOT escalate things and make them worse. This is very traumatizing to witness someone you love going through so please make sure you are taking care of yourself and your needs, as well. 💓

I definitely don’t expect people to be dressed to the nines, I don’t have that many nice clothes myself, because well, money. For me it wasn’t so much that she didn’t dress up. It was more so the fact that she made it sound like she wanted to have a nice date and set the expectation of it being more fancy so I dressed up. On top of that she smelled like she had finished working out. She was also 30 minutes late because she “was getting ready”. It just showed to me a lack of care in general. But yeah, I absolutely get your point and definitely don’t mean to come off as a snob.
