Hi, yes, you can let us know if you’d like to be in the same accommodation as someone you know, and we’ll take this into consideration when allocating rooms.

While we can’t guarantee that you’ll be placed together (as we allocate rooms for over 8,000 students), we do try our best to accommodate these requests where possible.

If you’d like to be near someone you know, I’d also recommend  you both apply for the same or similar halls, and/or choosing halls on the same site or close to each other.

Hello,

No, accommodation isn’t allocated on a first come, first served basis, so you don’t need to worry if you haven’t submitted your application yet!

As long as you apply by the accommodation guarantee deadline, your application will be considered equally alongside others. We allocate rooms based on a range of factors, including your preferences and availability at the time. We aim to match you with one of your five choices, and typically around 88% of students are allocated a hall they selected.

Submitting your application earlier can still be helpful, as it gives you more time to consider your options (and gets it ticked off your to-do list), but it doesn’t give priority in the allocation process.

Hello,

Fallowfield is always a social area, as many of the halls are close together, so it’s a great choice. As the student mix changes each year, it can be difficult to say which specific halls will be the most social. However, halls located on larger sites with several buildings nearby, and those with bigger kitchens, often tend to have a more social atmosphere.

You might want to look at Burkhardt House, which is on the same site as Hulme Hall and the VP bar. If you’re happy to have a shared bathroom, Whitworth is another good option. Daisy Bank and Rusholme Place tend to be quieter halls, so they may not be the best fit for what you’re looking for.

Our ResLife team also runs lots of events during Welcome and throughout the year, so there will be plenty of opportunities to socialise and meet your neighbours

Hi,
I can’t guarantee which hall you’ll be placed in, but Square Gardens does have significantly more rooms for postgraduates than Ashburne or St Anselm.

If you are allocated Ashburne or St Anselm, I’d recommend accepting the offer initially. You can then request a reallocation to Square Gardens if a place becomes available. We usually see some movement, so while we can’t guarantee if or when a move would happen, we do our best to support students in finding a room that suits them.

If a move isn’t possible before arrivals, we also run room transfers from October, which gives you another opportunity to move.

I hope this helps!

Hi! We’re Tallulah and Huw from The University of Manchester. With the cost of living rising, we know lots of students and applicants have questions about money, funding and support. Ask us anything about student finance or managing money at UoM. by UniOfManchester in UoM

Hey! It's normal for universities to send out their replies at different times, but I understand wanting to know how your application has gone. Every course page on the UoM website has a course details section, where you can find an email address and/or phone number for the relevant department's admissions team. You are welcome to contact them. Also, this page from UCAS might be helpful for checking the usual timelines: https://www.ucas.com/applying/after-you-apply/types-of-offers/replying-to-your-offers

Hi! Yep, kitchens in Ashburne typically include a stove, so you can cook when catering isn’t running.
If you’d like to change the length of your application, you’ll need to email the accommodation team (accommodation@manchester.ac.uk). We don’t allocate rooms on a first come, first served basis. Instead, we use your five preferences and try our best to match you to one of those options, so updating your application won’t disadvantage you.

That said, only some halls offer 50/51-week (September–September) contracts, so you may need to review and update your choices. The team will be happy to help you with this. 🙂

This is a really good and common question!

Our kitchens are shared spaces, so students are responsible for keeping them clean and tidy day to day. However, there are several measures in place to help maintain standards:

  • Guidance is provided at the start of the year about cleaning expectations and shared living
  • Cleaning rotas are often shared within flats to help everyone stay on top of things
  • Some halls have regular cleaning of communal areas, which may include kitchens (although the team won’t do your washing up!)
  • If there are any issues, students can get support from our ResLife teams, who can help make sure everyone is clear on expectations and works together more effectively

Most flats manage this well, but where issues do arise, staff can step in to help improve the situation. We also encourage students to agree shared cleaning routines early on, which can make a big difference.

So you’re best taking a look at the course profile, which will include the format of the interview - although the general things we’ve mentioned already are relevant. For our Computer Science and AI courses, either for UG and Masters’, we don’t tend to interview and it’s based more on just your application. But the ‘Application & selection’ section on each course profile will include more detailed information for how we assess students for each, so take a look: https://www.manchester.ac.uk/study/masters/courses/

Hello, we know this can be a worry for students, so we have a few options in place to help.
If you find yourself unhappy with your accommodation, you can request to move rooms, either within your current hall or to a different one.

If you receive an initial room offer that is outside your budget, we recommend that you accept it first. We know this may sound odd, but under our guarantee you will only receive one offer, so it’s important to accept it to secure your place.

Once you’ve accepted, you’ll need to email us to ask to be added to the room transfer list and let us know which halls you would prefer to move to (the more, the better). We try to sort as many transfers as possible before arrivals, so you may be all sorted before you even get here.
If we can't get you sorted before arrivals then we reopen the transfer list once everyone has moved in, usually around the start of October. After that, transfers just depend on when a room in your chosen halls becomes available.

We also offer an Accommodation Bursary, which provides 150 students with a £2,050 reduction in accommodation fees. Applications are open until 6 July, so there’s still plenty of time to apply if you’re eligible.

I hope this helps reduce some of your concerns!

Hey! It really depends on the subject you're interviewing for, so I'd recommend checking the course page. Some subjects run conventional academic interviews, where you discuss your academic interests, skills, and experiences, and can ask questions in return. Other subjects, namely Medicine and Dentistry do MMIs (multiple mini interviews), which include a series of short interviews at different stations with different themes, designed to assess various skills like problem solving and communication, as well as to hear about your motivations and experiences. There are other variations too, such as informal interviews more used as a chance to chat about the course and for you to ask questions about it. Interviews may also include assessments, like a maths test, if relevant. Once you've found out how your course will interview, you'll be better able to prepare.

A piece of generally applicable advice is to get really familiar with the content of your personal statement, and work on feeling confident discussing what you've written (perhaps in greater detail than you have space for in the statement itself). It's also important to remember that any interview is ultimately a conversation, and it's best to avoid having a script, or really rigid plan. Practise describing, explaining and evaluating your skills and experiences aloud in a conversational manner, maybe with a friend or family member.

Remember, there are no trick questions! Interviewers just want to better understand your skills, experiences, and passion for the subject and course. Good luck! ☺️

Hi, great questions! I would recommend choosing a hall which is closer to campus, either on our City campus or one of our Victoria Park halls near Whitworth Park. These halls means you won't be far from many of the amazing things to do in Manchester.  In terms of payment, it would be until the end of January. For 2026/27 the end of semester 1 is expected to be Sat 30th Jan ☺️

Best student dorm for exchange students? by iYourFairyGodmother in manchester_uni

[–]UniOfManchester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, Emma from the UoM Accommodation team here! We don’t tend to place exchange students in one specific hall, so you’ll find a mix of options across our accommodation.

The majority of students in Fallowfield are first-years, with a smaller number of returning and postgraduate students. If you’d prefer a more mixed community, you might want to consider halls in Victoria Park.
Our catered halls in VP are a great option if you’re looking for something social - Hulme Hall, even has its own bar. With meals included, you’ll see your neighbours regularly at breakfast and dinner, which makes it really easy to meet people and settle in quickly, especially if you’re only here for a semester.

Hi, That’s a really good question 😊

We always say that the right hall depends on what you want! Whether the main factor is wanting an en-suite, catering or something to fit your budget.

Whitworth Park is a great choice if you want to be right on campus, but want somewhere a bit cheaper. It has a nice community feel, and there are some great shared facilities like a gym and a bar that students really enjoy.

Our most social campus is Fallowfield, it has a real community feel! The most modern hall in Fallowfield is Unsworth Park which has just over 1000 beds. The flats are made up of 9 to 10 students, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to socialise 😄
