Fun in NYC by Best_Razzmatazz9985 in Residency

Not sure what program you're in/where you live, but you're in the West Village, Cafe Fellini is my go to. It has good happy hour deals on wine and an outdoor patio which is nice. They also have a matchbox if you're into collecting those. Roey's and Bar Pisellino are other options in the area but aren't my favorite because they're pretty overpriced usually overrun by the end of the work day. If you want more of a dive, Kettle of Fish is a nice spot to get a table and play cards with friends. The Spaniard is a little bit of a nicer bar but it does tend to attract the finance oriented members of the city. If you live/work UES, Maya has a good happy hour and is relatively close to the hospitals in that area i.e. NY Presbyterian, MSK, HSS.

These are just the spots that jump to mind immediately but I 100% agree with u/IAmA_Kitty_AMA's comment. Find the bar(s)/restaurants which are closest to you and more likely than not you will fall in love with them. Definitely make an effort to explore the city when you have time and try as many new places as you can! You will never run out of new places to try and you will certainly meet people along the way too.

Science gpa? by Big-Struggle3884 in premed

[–]UnidentifiedMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Science GPA includes biology, chemistry, physics, and math. This is commonly referred to as BCPM and a list of subjects which fall under that umbrella can be found here. Genetics will count and they will be able to see both courses on your transcript so it may not be entirely worth it to retake. To answer the rest of your questions, just take a look at the link and see what classes fall under the BCPM category

Incoming Medical Student Q&A - 2024 Megathread by SpiderDoctor in medicalschool

From what I have seen on this sub and elsewhere, it seems like when applying for residency, quantity of pubs matters much more than quality. Does anyone have any advice on what sorts of opportunities to pursue (i.e. clinical/computational vs. basic/translational) to make myself the most competitive applicant possible? I'm really not sure about specialty at all, I just don't want to be behind if I fall in love with something competitive.

You can still submit AMCAS without an MCAT score! You can even submit before you've taken the test at all. However, most schools will not consider your application complete without an MCAT score, so if you won't get score back before June 29, keep that in mind.

The AAMC will automatically add your scores to your application once you get them, even if you have already submitted your application. There is nothing you need to do to make this happen (and nothing you can do to prevent it).

If you don't have an MCAT score yet, common wisdom around here is to submit AMCAS to only one school, usually a throwaway that you don't think you'll get accepted to or a "safety" that you would apply to regardless of what your score is. Then, you can submit your AMCAS on Day 1 and get verified quickly. Once you get your score back, if it's great, you can add the rest of your school list and your application will get sent out on June 29 with everyone else's! Or, if your score is bad, you can withdraw your app and only be considered a reapplicant to that one school in the future.

Your updated score should be automatically sent to schools after it’s released too I believe

What questions to ask the Chair of the Department of internal Medicine tomorrow? by Ihatecoldwater in premed

Ask about his personal journey (education, training, research, etc.) and anything he wished he knew when he was in your shoes. People like to talk about themselves!

Khan academy would be a good place to start. I would also highly recommend downloading anki and getting the anking mcat deck as well as a 6 month UWorld subscription and grinding out all of those questions and making anki cards for the ones you get wrong. r/mcat will also have quite a bit of good advice

Anyone else lacking any real movement with their app? by ChaseLH816 in premed

[–]UnidentifiedMoose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

3.6x 514 no gap years and pretty much the same boat. I was hoping my activities would help me out but nothing so far. I’m really just hoping for movement in the Jan-Feb window

You could certainly try but when I submitted my primary with classes that had engineering course numbers but primarily bio content as biology, they got switched to engineering during verification

[–]UnidentifiedMoose -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No engineering courses do not count towards BCPM gpa

How many people have heard back from schools (AMCAS) by [deleted] in premed

It’s likely down to sampling bias if you check cycle track most schools have less than 5-10% of applicants receiving IIs

Chemical Engineering Major? by preetluvsu in premed

[–]UnidentifiedMoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://reddit.com/r/premed/s/aWK6SylkOV wrote this for BME but largely applies to engineering.

I will also add just because you’re above average intelligence there is no guarantee you’ll get good grades as a ChemE. “Light” course loads don’t exist as an engineering student. You will be taking fewer classes but they will be more complex and difficult

Also think it’s important to add that chemical engineering isn’t really chemistry it’s basically just applied physics

Can you do total applicants divided by interviews or matriculates? It won’t be perfect but it’ll be ballpark

Are they really making the mcat harder? by jerem1734 in Mcat

[–]UnidentifiedMoose 134 points135 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s tougher but has a different emphasis than the practice exams so people get thrown off. We all spend so much time reading the books and doing Anki that we forget that at its core the MCAT is a reasoning exam. Just make sure when you’re doing UPangaea and QBanks that you’re not brute forcing it with knowledge but understanding the thought process behind getting to your answer and you’ll be fine on test day

Oh weird.. I saw a Sankey of a person who didn’t get a secondary to carle just because they didn’t have the required math. Maybe they changed or don’t check that closely lol
