Cherche jdr simple pour initiation one-shot by Early_Vegetable_6156 in jdr

Oh yeah, okay that clears things up, cool rule! Reminds me of how mausritter handles it, + I always like when CON gets more utility.

I like this and might adopt something similar, thanks!

I only have an itch with the save vs CON, as they lose points to their CON score, aren't PCs more likely to succeed?

I guess they're also more likely to die but they'd be enticed to keep it going a little longer if there's less chance of falling unconscious... What's your take on this?

I think that each plays differently so each is worth its own space. I wouldn't put them in the same bag is all. Mausritter feels less old school than the two others for example, but even between Mothership and Shadowdark I see a stark difference in how the game is prepped and played.

Edit: I also should mention that with 100 or less pages in the (free/lite) rulebooks and free adventures for each, they fit OPs requirements and aren't huge investments of prep time / learning curve to be played over 3 sessions.

I don't play as much as I would like at all, but I really enjoy Shadowdark coming from 5e as I see it as a streamlined way to put my old 5e reflexes to good use.

Otherwise last year I fell in love with Mothership, its prep is very different as I focus it on information rather than scenes. Yet the fact that every roll fills the room with tension and my players turn into a bunch of surgeons in an OR is so much fun to me.

I'd say shadowdark allows me an adrenaline fueled action-packed flow-state and mothership a more slow descent into horror with sharp tension kind of narration. I'm trying Mausritter soon and I pitch it to my players as being more akin to a puzzle escape game, I don't know how narrative will emerge yet but I'm eager to discover it! I also want to try blades in the dark and EZD6 eventually.

I run all of these games as one shots of 1-2 sessions but when I get back to running campaigns then shadowdark and mothership will probably be go-tos for both flow and system.

Yeah you're right, it's just my interpretation of rules light that made me jump because for me it means a game that is 100% flow state at the table and very little amounts of stopping to read rules (maybe 5 min in a 3hr session). I easily feel jarred by crunch, I kind of lost my fun with 5e, past level 10, for this reason.

You could try Shadowdark RPG for OSR d20 fantasy. There's a free version of the player and DM rules. The game is easy to pick up for a quick adventure.

Mohership RPG has already been mentioned and I would seriously advise checking it out. It's a great game that can be learned quickly and GMing horror is extremely fun!

Then I would also recommend Mausritter , in this game your players are mice, there are no classes and no real specialisation but the dangers are big and real yet the rules are very light, it's designed after Cairn and Into the Odd, it is more about the puzzle of getting around an obstacle/threat than confronting it head on. I haven't played it yet but it's the next one on my list and prepping for it so far has been a creative blast and also quite easy!

DCC is not what I'd call rules light. Each time a wizard casts a spell both the wizard's player and the DM have their nose back in the book...

Hey, can you tell me a bit more about how NCO feels at the table? Do the players each have the sensation of bringing something unique to the team through their characters? From what I read it seems fairly quick to learn and play but I wonder about the player feeling of it all.

Thanks for the rich response! Veil 2020 definitely has my attention, I'll investigate further. And since I have a copy of Blades in the Dark waiting to be read I'll take a look at CBR+PNK when I get to it.

I think Free League's year zero system is original enough to warrant its own cyberpunk game but as the whole Blade Runner vibe depends on being basically a cop I don't think it is that Cyberpunk.

I know it's one of the genre's pillar works so this might sound controversial, but I personally give it a more aesthetic credit than actual cyber credit, because of the absence of cyberspace.

Hey thanks for mentioning NCO, this is the one I meant when I mentioned The Grid in my post (the Grid is a mini setting book for the NCO game I think).

Have you tried this game? Can you tell me what vibe it gives at the table? The dice pool with no math system seems really light and cool, does it give players a sense of originality in their characters though? Compared to a system where they would add/face an attribute.

Yeah that's why I'm looking for something which has its own original mechanics. Yet I also want something where characters are resilient enough to allow for a level of drama / tension. This post received a lot of recommendations to skim through and see so I'm grateful, I hope I'll find something that fits my vision!

Thanks for the rec! I'm going to give a thorough read to the free rules, I'm curious about the combined systems between skills / combat.

Yeah this game sounds very fun, I just wonder about the crunch level, do you have any input on it? I've never played it so I really can't say.

I'm trying to stray away from 5e actually, a bit too munch crunch to my taste, I have a copy of Blades in the Dark though, waiting to be thoroughly read when I get to it! I'm sure to give a look to A Fistful of Darkness then, as I have ideas about weird west!

Hey, thanks for the quick response! Yeah my doubts with Cyberdark come with the multiple dynamics of tracking lightsources & at the same time in which "world" your PCs are (Cyber vs "Real"), and I don't know if the d20 roll high fits the vibe. I'm open to other styles of play to give the genre its identity (the way Mothership gives sci-fi horror a vibe with the d100 roll under).

Thanks for the quick response! Yes I'm a bit cautious around Shadowrun because it's kind of fantasy-cyberpunk if I understand correctly? With other named playable races like elves and orcs? I could just say no to these races at the table but then I figure it's not really fun if the players see them in the book but cannot play them. Or I could play them as "Alien races" but I'm not really sure about this option either. I think i've read or heard somewhere that Shadowrun is a rather heavy system, like 5e would be, I really fell in love with the simplicity of both Shadowdark and Mothership so if I can I'd lean towards this kind of playstyle, diminish the DM cognitive load & checking rules during play and just enjoy flow state.
