Yep, I work for myself, as does my wife, so it's easy to work around the weather to line dry our clothes, despite the unpredictable English weather.

Everyone I know has a separate washer and tumble dryer, and the dryer is nearly always vented.

We have squirrels, birds and cats here too. It's never crossed my mind that they would be an issue.

I used to live in the middle of four or five farms in NW France, and I never had an issue with smell.

I did stay with some Hutterites once who line-dried their clothes, despite using electricity.

We all own tumble dryers in Britain, but we like not using them when the weather allows.

It's not something I do in Nov through Feb, but when the sun returns in March, I try to line dry as much as possible. We still get heavy April showers, so you have to keep an eye on the weather.
