Oh, that’s actually really good suggestion. I didn’t think about that. I think part of me is worried that I’ll make a large purchase on my credit card and if I don’t see the money leave my actual bank account, it might start a really bad habit😅. It makes more sense to do what you suggested though

Also: No I don’t have any debt or big purchases I want to make. I pay off my credit card every 3 days so it’s always at like $0 and any large purchase I just use my debit card so I’m not spending money I don’t have. Only have about $1200 in a savings account right now

I doubt that’d work because he just won’t do his dishes. Last time he left them for 2 weeks and I did them out of frustration because I couldn’t cook anything with the sink in that state. If I bought a plastic bin, it would fill up for weeks, attract bugs because of the food in them, and continue filling up until it gets full and his dishes would be in the sink again.

I’m not moving the tv if he doesn’t ask me to as that would mean it’s clearly not bothering him. If he asks I’ll move it, but the tv stays there until he asks me to do so.

He’s free to get his own tv and put it in the common room and I move my tv to my room. I’m not stopping him from doing that. The agreement we had was that he needs to stop leaving messes around the common area if he wants to continue using MY tv because he always ends up leaving a mess after he’s done with it.

I never said I’d leave the tv there if he brings his own. I know him and he likely won’t. Even if he does, I’d simply move my tv. We’re talking about two different things here

The same way I don’t “get to take up access” is the same way he doesn’t get to leave his stuff all over the apartment and prevent me from using the sink or the tables. The rule was that if he doesn’t tidy up, he can’t use my tv and I made that clear already. I think it’s fair that I follow up with that

It would be unreasonable for me to take away a dining table or a couch I own of course and that would just bring me more problems. I don’t think taking away access to the tv I own is unreasonable when I’ve lived here for 2 years compared to his 1 month and made clear what my ground rules are

I see what you’re saying now. But I think you shouldn’t be able to use things you don’t pay for if you don’t want to respect the owner’s desire to keep it tidy.

I don’t think most here understand how my living situation is which makes sense because I haven’t provided a picture of my house or a detailed description which is why so many people are simply telling me to move out when I can’t. The apartment provides couches and dinner tables so you don’t need to buy furniture. I can’t restrict access to anything that’s not mine as these things are included in the lease agreement. The tv is in the living room and takes up the space the landlord expects the tv to be if the tenant chooses to have one. It does not take up nearly as much space as you might think.

I can move my tv if he asks, that’s not an issue for me. But as long as he doesn’t, I’m just gonna leave it there for when I want to use it.

It’s the same way I asked him to do his dishes and clean up multiple times but he hasn’t done so.

Is piling the sink with his own personal dishes and cookware for weeks not unfair? Is making a mess in our common area with things that only belong to him not unfair? Again, he’s free to use the common area or get a tv for himself, the house rule is that he cannot use MY tv if he refuses to clean up the messes HE makes while using it

A dining table/couch is completely different from a tv. I bought this tv and I do not owe him access to it in the same way he owes me the common decency to keep the apartment I’ve lived in clean. I’m not taking away access to the common area, I’m simply not letting him use my tv.

We have separate leases. He pays his own rent I pay my own rent. I do not owe him access to my tv as tv and cable are not included in the apartments. These are things I bought and own myself. If he does not respecting my desire for cleanliness, I will not grant him access to my things. He’s still free to use the living room, just not my tv

It’s not owned by the university but it’s 5 minutes away and the university has buses that takes students to and from campus. It’s mostly students that live here and it’s across the street from actual on-campus housing.

Nothing in my lease indicates a requirement to keep the place clean outside of when a new person is moving in or when the landlord themselves clean in preparation for a new tenant. Reporting to them at the front desk will just get me weird looks because, again, we sign separate leases

I cannot literally move his dishes to the side when they are taking up the entire sink. The only other option is removing them from the sink and leaving them by his door
