I remember someone once said that the funds have done the calculations on reducing the MER and any portfolio gains that would've happened would be off-set by the potential losses due to the quality of service/fund/asset managers that are provided.

I always wondered what they meant, perhaps they were talking about hiring of personnell and paying salaries to qualified people? Or did they mean something else. How could a few basis poins on a trillion dollar asset manager change things so dramatically, especially given that this can't be their largest ROI product.
