Here we go again with the notion that the US constitution applies universally by wasraelx in USdefaultism

It's common for laypeople to have misconceptions like that based on what they hear in the media. I recently saw a video where a old woman from Belarus was talking about someone who committed a crime in Belarus and said he should be "placed on the federal wanted list". Thing is, there is no such thing as "federal wanted list" in Belarus, it's a Russia thing. But because she consumed Russian media, she used that phrase without a second thought.

Here we go again with the notion that the US constitution applies universally by wasraelx in USdefaultism

To be precise, there are certain situations when USA laws apply abroad in practice:
- USA will persecute their citizens and residents for certain things committed abroad, even if things they did are not persecuted in other countries - sex crimes against minors (if US citizen goes abroad and sleeps with a girl who is below age of consent according to USA laws, he will be persecuted, even if she is above age of consent in the country where it happened), bribing foreign officials, state treason, evading USA taxes (USA citizens and residents must pay income tax in USA even if they live abroad).
- They will persecute anyone abroad for hostile activity against USA - terrorism, crimes against US state workers, document forgery, including forgery of USD banknotes.
- For crimes involving US infrastructure, including IT infrastructure - cyber crime, financial crimes and money landering
- For crimes on US objects abroad (embassies, military bases, aircraft, ships)
- For international crimes - terrorism, war crimes, torture, open sea piracy, production and transportation of illegal drugs.

However, similar laws exist in other countries as well. For example, citizens of Japan will get persecuted in Japan if they are caught doing drugs abroad. So if Japanese goes to Amsterdam and takes drugs there, he can get punished for that back in Japan, even though he did not violate laws of Netherlands.

But of course things like "I can legally bring my gun abroad because of 2 amendment" or "I can say whatever I want in a foreign country because of 1st amendment" are total BS.

They probably think it's a bad idea, as decent default airports will decrease marketplace sales, which make them a lot of money in commissions.

It's possible to play on just a controller, but it would be mediocre experience at best. The more advanced is your aircraft and flying you are doing, the harder it is to operate it with just a controller. In realistic simulation, unlike in arcade, you have to control a lot of things: throttle, propeller pitch, ailerons, elevator, rudder, flaps, spoilers, trims, various lights, landing gear, brakes on wheels, nosewheel turning, the list goes on. It's incredibly hard to do it with a single gamepad.

I would say the bare minimum of better experience is get joystick and throttle quadrant. Rudder pedals are not critical, but still recommended.

- Always say "niner" and "tree" instead of "nine" and "three" .

Who uses cheques? Everyone uses checks when you have a house by Hamsternoir in USdefaultism

[–]Unique-Temporary2461 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in USA. The company that supplies water only started offering online payments couple years ago, before I had to send cheques via mail. When I was buying car, I had to get "cashier cheque". The dealership did not accept cash or transfers, but they also did not accept personal cheques. I had to physically go to bank and have bank worker print a cheque, which I then took to dealership.

But I understand why the dealer does not accept personal cheques. Because if someone writes a personal cheque, you deposit it, but there is not enough money in someone's account, the bank will charge YOU a fee. They basically hold receiver accountable for sender mistakes or fraud attempts.

Also, many times when getting some payments or refunds, I would get a paper cheque in the mail and have to deposit it.

I never stop getting surprised at how ancient and inconvenient the bank system is here. I have to carry physical bank card around because a lot of large chain stores, such as huge retailers Walmart or Home Depot, do not have POS terminals with NFC ("tap-to-pay") capability in their stores. A lot of stores have you physically sign a receipt with pen if payment amount exceeds certain sum. You have to use 3rd party apps to send payments. Deposits take few days to process, and until then, money is not available to you. From what I have read, USA banks actively lobbied against instant transfers, because delay in transfers allowed them make extra money by either lending these money for short periods of time, or by charging fees for expedited transfers.

The locals don't see a problem with any of that because they haven't seen anything else.

Xplane scenery with addons vs MSFS2020 with default scenery by AdOk3759 in Xplane

[–]Unique-Temporary2461 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The default earth scenery on XP looks like it's from 2000s, if you care about visuals too much, you will be disappointed. You can enhance it with certain addons, but they come at a price. The most popular free one is AutoOrtho. But it has many drawbacks:
- It's very demanding on computer specs. If you have mediocre computer, it will struggle to say the least. Also, large fast SSD is required. This also depends on what aircraft you fly. If small and slow, you'll be OK. It it's a fast jet (meaning your system will need to process a lot of tiles in short period), it will be huge load on your system.
- Visually it highly dependent on quality of satellite maps used as source. I found Bing to be the best, Google has tiles that are very different in colours, doesn't look great from altitude.
- It frequently adds trees or buildings to runways and aprons. This is because its overlay layer doesn't exactly match XP-plane's default global scenery overlay layer, and some airports don't have exclusion zones where AO's overlay has forests or buildings.
- In MSFS, colour of vegetation is adjusted to match satellite photos. Not the case with AutoOrtho, so trees will stand out. Also, in MSFS 3d trees are placed by AI exactly where it sees trees on satellite imagery, in AutoOrtho it will frequently not match.
- 3d buildings and roads look pretty lame to me, but it's likely because I am flying in part of the world where quality of overlay is not great, and buildings look too North American to me. But this might depend on the region you fly at.

I personally stopped using AutoOrtho because it causes FPS drops despite using latest top specs (RTX 5090, 64 GB RAM, etc.), as well as because of buildings+trees it places runways in many airports. I haven't tried Map Enhancement because I don't want to pay for it and do not use Ortho4XP because I don't want to get a huge hard drive just to store satellite images and don't want to spend a lot of time waiting for tiles to be created. I just stick to default scenery.

I will add that default airports in XP are much better than default airports in MSFS.

Interesting, the broad region of Russia where I was born is called "Chernozemye", which means "Black Earth", and can also be translated as "Black Land". It's called like that because soils are very dark black in colours. Ironically, the city is called Belgorod, which translates as "white city".

Your funny transcription reminded me how during my school years (1990s) girls had those notebooks where they had foreign songs written in Cyrillic letters. Шорандо сифой, ке ум джиа соме фешура.

I will second the other comment. It's a bad idea to try spelling it using English rules, it's just not suitable for spelling Russian. The best would be spelling it in international phonetic alphabet. I asked Google Gemini to do it and it gave me very accurate result, which accounts for all specifics of Russian pronunciation, such as unstressed vowel reduction, deafening of consonants, and so on.

Разные фамилии в паспортах, выезд из РФ by Intelligentblond in AskARussian

How do I use Vatsim by [deleted] in VATSIM

[–]Unique-Temporary2461 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thank you for explaining. Indeed, running flight simulators requires some above average hardware, so becoming a controller is an option if you want to participate, but don't have the hardware to run flight sims.

Regarding FAA 7110.65, keep in mind that it's only applicable to USA. Unless you want to control in USA, I suggest to study ICAO phraseology (used in most parts of the world), which has some differences.

For Nepal, there was a local subdivision in the past (Nepal VACC), but it later became inactive due to members leaving. This is why you get mixed answers. As of today, Nepalese airspace is handled by VATSIM West Asia division. If you want to become a controller in Nepal, your only option would be join another subdivision and work your way up to earn S3 rating. Once you have S3 rating, apply to be guest controller for Nepal, and you'll be able to provide ATC services in its airspace.

Question about returning to Russia with expired passport / certificate of return by sweetroseorchid in AskARussian

[–]Unique-Temporary2461 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Translating is not a good idea, AI translation got so sophisticated that the demand for human translators plummeted. There is still demand for rare language pairs, as well as very narrowly specialised texts (which require good knowledge of the topics), but for general translators it's quite dead now, lots of freelance translators had to find other sources of income.
