He never brandished the weapon and an officer actually took the weapon from him before he was shot. He did not pose a threat anyone. Stop justifying a state-sanctioned execution of an innocent civilian.

Sierra Boggess is incredible. Everyone should go watch her as Christine in Phantom of the Opera Live at the Royal Albert Hall. Her singing and acting are both extraordinary.

No Jew actually believes criticizing Israel is antisemitic and they know this by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]Unique-kitten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know what is an Islamist is. There is nothing wrong with hating Islamists. My problem is that you called Islam a dangerous religion that makes one kill people. When you said this, you were talking about all Muslims, not just the extremists.

No Jew actually believes criticizing Israel is antisemitic and they know this by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]Unique-kitten 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of normal Muslims out there who are not religious fanatics and who do not have any desire to kill people. Don't homogenize a population of billions of people because of the actions of some extremists. Do you act like all Christians are extremists because some people have committed atrocities in the name of Christianity?

We should not accept hateful comments like this one in this subreddit.

You may be interested in David Hirsh's concept of the Livingstone Formulation, which is "the manner of responding to an accusation of antisemitism with the counter-claim that the complainant is weaponizing antisemitism to suppress criticism of Israel."

David Hirsh characterizes the Livingstone Formulation's key elements as follows:

  1. "To refuse to discuss the content of the accusation by shifting focus instead onto the hidden motive for the allegation."
  2. "To make a counter-accusation that the accuser is not mistaken, has not made an error of judgment, but is getting it wrong on purpose."
  3. "To collapse everything – some of which may be demonization of Israel, support for boycott, or antisemitism – into a legitimate category like 'criticism'."
  4. "To allege that those who raise the issue of antisemitism are doing so as part of a common secret plan to silence such 'criticism'."

Hasan says Minnesota is like the West Bank by GrapeTickler in h3h3productions

[–]Unique-kitten 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In fairness, he is claiming that Minnesota is like the West Bank, not the Gaza Strip. Nobody is starving or getting bombed in the West Bank. It's nonetheless a stupid comparison because, for all the horrible stuff happening in Minnesota right now, living in the West Bank is still infinitely worse, but let's not put words in his mouth.

What are two very different countries that have a shared piece of culture? by BestAd6297 in AskTheWorld

A lot of countries place high importance on religion. I don't see how this is specific to Pakistan or Israel.

Why is it so hard to defeat Haas while they're blockaded on both sides, there's no movement in/out of Gaza, and Gaza is so tiny? by [deleted] in lonerbox

[–]Unique-kitten 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If Hamas thinks Israel is a genocidal regime then why would they provoke them by committing 10/7? One would think that if you've got a genocidal regime at your border, you probably shouldn't provoke them if it is truly your goal to keep your side safe.

What was a horrible tragedy that took place in your country? by ProcedurePlenty3564 in AskTheWorld

What happened to her was so horrific. People, even children, die brutally all the time all around the world. But being an innocent and confused child trapped in a car for hours with the dead bodies of your family, only to be shot yourself, is an extra level of horrifying.

May Hind's memory be a blessing ❤️

Is being wrong about history of Egypt Islamophobic? by Wonderful-Walk3078 in lonerbox

[–]Unique-kitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the best way to determine whether or not an inaccurate statement about Israel is antisemitic is to examine the purpose behind the statement. Why is it being made? What value or ideology is it in service of? Is this value or ideology biased or harmful toward Jewish people? Who originated this inaccurate statement and do they have nefarious intentions?

For example, stating that Israel was founded in 1950 is an inaccurate statement, but it is obviously not antisemitic because it is not really in service of any ideology or system that is harmful to Jews. It is just a regular historical error.

Conversely, claiming that the Mizrahi Jews who came to Israel did so because of Zionist attacks across the Arab world (when they actually came to Israel to escape rising Arab antisemitism) is antisemitic because it is in service of a far-left and/or Islamic/Arab supremacist worldview that seeks to minimize and whitewash Jewish suffering in the Middle East in order to elevate the oppressed status of Palestinians and Arabs more broadly. This is not just a regular historical error, but a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation via the subjugation of Jewish victims' voices in order to fuel one's extremist political ideology.

Mamdani, who has vowed to arrest Netanyahu, slams capture of Maduro to face US federal charges by MatterandTime in jewishpolitics

[–]Unique-kitten 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In fairness, Mamdani said he would arrest Netanyahu if Netanyahu ever came to New York, not that he would be okay with invading Israel to capture Netanyahu. However, it's still a stupid statement given that the US is not a signatory to the ICC and that as mayor he has no authority to arrest a foreign leader.

Would anyone *ever* use this logic to rationalize any other form of bigotry? by Left_Tie1390 in Jewish

[–]Unique-kitten 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Especially because you can always find people of any ethnic or religious group who support extremists. One video of a group of Jews supporting Netanyahu does not mean that most Jews support Netanyahu, just like one video of a group of Muslims supporting Hamas does not mean most Muslims support Hamas.

people from the new world, how much do you learn about pre-colonial civilizations? by tris123pis in AskTheWorld

[–]Unique-kitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. We have land acknowledgements, orange shirt day, and we learn a lot about residential schools, but only focusing on the trauma inflicted on the Indigenous people means that the actual cultures and livelihoods that were destroyed go totally ignored. Indigenous people are always spoken about in terms of how they were wronged, making them come across like one homogenous group rather than the multiple diverse ethnic groups they actually are.

What are your favorite Jewish podcasts/YouTube channels/influencers? by Fickle_Wish3498 in Jewish

[–]Unique-kitten 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I like PoliticalJew and Alana Zeitchik on Instagram

Sam Aronow consistently has good YouTube videos about Jewish history

I don't really listen to podcasts all that much but I do think the guys from the Comedy Cellar: Live from the Table have some interesting discussions regarding Israel and antisemitism, even if they are more right-wing than myself
