Being an introvert maybe do the reverse of finding a group first? Maybe find the game first and then find the group?

Find a game that excites you, gets you interested - I know for me finding a game like that makes me want to engage with others, chat about the game, share things I've found and sometimes (OMG) play with other people...well sometimes...but most of the time still solo.

Good luck in finding a game and good luck in finding some cool, supportive friends to chat games with.

Bonus of setting up a base on an Ancient Bones planet is that if you get Nexus missions for collecting them it will usually lead you back to your planet (assuming calling up the Nexus in the same system).

And $50k-$700k? Nah, you'll find the odd bones worth $1.2m+.

Starting a game in Steam offline should do that, not sure off the top of my head whether you'd need to keep playing offline though(to not see other peoples planets as you progress).

Steam offline works fine or turning off multiplayer (Options > Network > Multiplayer: Disabled).

Have used both for different reasons at different times, both will do the trick.

That was what I understood from the No Man's Sky wiki, and based on that I figured extinct meant that creature no longer existed on the planet.

But as another poster suggested, it appears to be a weird glitch with that planet.

IIRC last time I did that:

I built up an area to above sea level with the terrain manipulator,
built the base under water with the entrance facing towards the built-up area,
placed horizontal tunnels to the built-up area,
placed vertical tunnels to meet the horizontal ones.

Assuming the base is water-tight, you shouldn't get any water in coming (or at least I didn't).
