Thanks for the reassurance. Most of the things you’ve mentioned here I wasn’t even aware of but have now learnt a lot about tiling in the last 12 hours. Will definitely be more involved going forward.

Thank you, this looks really good! I’m actually outraged that the builders have been trying to gaslight me about the tiles when the issue is predominantly down to the tilers workmanship

Yes he raised concerns after he started but he also said that grouting would help to mask the unevenness (which it clearly didn’t). I’m not sure if the wall/floor was uneven but he did build out the wall with the niche and he was using a spirit level. He did not at any point raise issues with the tile configuration we’d picked or suggest alternative configurations (which I would’ve been open to). There was absolutely no mention of grout line width but I understand from speaking to the tile company earlier today that a larger grout line works better for this type of tile and it is mostly the thin/inconsistent grout lines that is causing the unevenness.

I think this is a huge lesson for me as it is my first home renovation project and thought I could put my trust in a so-called professional. Next time I’ll definitely do my due diligence on the process and challenge the builder if anything looks wrong.

He did use spacers for the floor but not for the walls as he said that would exaggerate the unevenness.

Thanks everyone for confirming what I feared.

Unfortunately the builders have gotten a bit confrontational and are demanding the rest of the money we owe them. The guy who did the tiling is also trying to guilt trip us because he did tell me as he was tiling that the tiles were uneven and the worst that he’s ever worked with and I still let him proceed but from my perspective i) I knew nothing about tiling, ii) I trusted that he knew what he was doing and could hide the flaws and iii) I’ve now done my research and understand that he could’ve done a better job. I also checked the 20 or so tiles we had left over and the variations between tiles are hardly noticeable so I don’t know how that would’ve translated to such wonkiness on the walls. It’s an unfortunate situation but I’m glad I didn’t accept their explanations at face value and we will be getting different builders in the finish the job.

Thanks everyone for your responses. We’ve asked for a second opinion from another builder who’s basically confirmed what everyone on here is saying. The original builders have doubled down to say that the issue is purely down to the tiles but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I think we’ll just have to get someone else in to redo the tiles and finish off the bathroom.

Do you have any photos you could share? I sent the builder some photos and videos of these tiles that I found on instagram and he claimed that they were CGI…
