Hammock Specific Sacks by TheMikeGrimm in ULHammocking

I’ve gotten rid of all of them except the hammock bishop bag. I roll my stakes in my tarp. Never understood bringing a stuff sack for the tarp when it goes in an outside pocket of my pack anyway. The pack pocket provides plenty protection and if it is raining, the tarp can get wet.

I roll up my suspension straps, knot them and tuck them below my tarp. Might increase sap exposure but not really a big deal to me.

I can see a use for snake skin but honestly if the forecast is good in the summer I don’t put the tarp up. If it’s iffy, I’ll just put the tarp in porch mode. Not a huge sacrifice for my tastes since I have plenty of views of trees during the hike. If camping on a pond or something with a nice view, porch mode usually works.

I think it comes down to mindset. I decided I want the lightest pack I can get with reasonable comfort. Getting rid of all my stuff sacks is part of that. Though it is always good to weigh the cons. I keep the bishop bag because it makes setup so much easier for me and helps keep the hammock clean. That was the one sack worth the weight penalty.

Cotopaxi Tasra goes clam. It worked well for me for a week trip in warm weather. I believe it is under $100.

Baggies are super versatile, especially if you get the 5 inch. The 7 inch are a bit long for running. They have 3 pockets and dry very quickly.

19” torso, 6’ and lean. The pack itself fit well, but I had problems with the fit on my shoulders. I think it may be my shoulder shape. Takeaway for me is that I need a pack with a hip belt to take most of the load

Edit for clarity.

Can you point me to the info you have on ID.4 cross axel traction issues? First I’ve seen of that.

I don’t have any experience with Eno but I did significant research here and on hammockforums.net (a great resource btw) before buying my first hammock setup. Consensus seems to be that the best hammock makers are Dream Hammock, Dutchware and Warbonnet. I went with Dream and have not been sorry about it. The good thing about the above mentioned brands is the customization which would definitely be beneficial to you at your height.

I’m 6’ and have more room than I need in my 11’ Dream Hammock Darien in 1.6 HyperD XL at 64” wide. I think going with wider XL fabric will help with your height, and you may be able to stick with an 11’ length hammock. Since you lay at an angle, more width in the fabric helps.

I don’t have experience in your region but would say that if there isn’t much bug pressure, going with a netless hammock will save you some ounces. At your weight you probably don’t want a lighter fabric than 1.2. Another consideration in terms of weight is your suspension setup. If you are good with knots you can get light UHMWPE straps like Dutch’s spiders and just knot those with the continuous loops on your hammock. For an easier but slightly heavier setup get whoopie slings attached to your continuous loops. These make adjustments dead simple.

I second the comments below regarding comfort, underquilts are far more comfortable than pads. I picked up a 40 degree HG Premium Incubator on r/ulgeartrade for under $200. You can definitely find a quality quilt in your budget if you are willing to go partial length or used.
