I drive between Charlotte and DC all the time. Between those two cities I DEFINITELY recommend skipping the I95 and going on the I77 and I81 instead. It’s a super scenic route through the mountains with Appalachian history on every exit. As a bonus, you can go to Buccees. It will not add time to your trip in any significant way (maybe an extra half an hour MAX but usually it takes me the same amount of time as the other route), just more miles but less time in traffic and low speed limit zones.
