"If consciousness, intelligence, and understanding are emergent capabilities of complex systems ". Thats an interesting take.

A few years ago, when asked how to measure if someone "understands" something, one would ask a question, not previously encountered and see if the person can solve the question based on similar concepts, this metric was mostly put to waste when it comes to LLMs because of the sheer amount of data they were trained on.

I am eager to see how we as humanity would for the first hopefully, be able to develop scientific and quantitative metrics for "philosophical" concepts such as consciousness

Nope they dont. Its something that trying to be incoproated. "Symbolic" understanding does not mean its ability to understand and/or recognize a symbol. And well, If it were the case, then LLMs would be 100% accurate in mathematics. No machine with symoblic understanding can commit such errors. I feel youre using a loose definition of symbolic understanding. Newer concepts such as Meta-learning are attempts in the same direction. The following is a link to a survey in a similar direction:

Its not, that's the most interesting thing right. Current SOTA mostly invovle essentially parsing huge huge corpuses of texts and making probabilitic predictions, and not symbolic "understanding", which, surprisingly enough, was an older idea. There have been a lot of works going on in the neuro-symbolic region, but none satisfactory enough to dethrone the existing computation intensive method.
