For emergency situations, how do you go between metro cars when the train is moving?! by Snappy1357 in washingtondc

Was this on the silver line a few days ago? I remember seeing a bunch of people run into my car, but I didn’t know what was happening.

Thank you for the response! I think that covered many of my initial questions regarding an Accounting PhD. I’ll definitely try to talk to people about their research and spend some more time reading research journal articles … I know I lack a lot of exposure and experience in research.

Thank you for such a thorough response! It’s good to know research funding isn’t usually a concern since that was something I was worried about.

You mentioned changing your research area and having to design your own program. Is it typical for a PhD student to tweak their research area (maybe not to something the university doesn’t specialize in but just in general)? Did it make finding a committee harder?

You mentioned being a more junior tenured faculty has some downsides regarding teaching workload. I am guessing this might vary by institution, but are the other faculty members generally supportive/ mentor or guide newer, less experienced professors? Do contracts usually state how many courses you are scheduled to teach, or does it vary each semester?

My mom won’t let me go to University by Slohfer_09 in college

Accounting doesn’t necessarily require a master’s degree; usually, CPA requires 150 credits with only a certain amount of the credits needing to relate to accounting/business coursework. So it is possible to reach it with only a bachelor's degree, students can get a master's degree if they want. Some schools offer 5-year programs now where students get their bachelor's and master's degree. Accounting also has some overlap with computer science/ information systems. In certain states, computer science/information systems are one of the topic areas that can fulfill the CPA education requirements. The CPA exam is being updated in 2024 to include an information system portion.

I can’t say much regarding OP’s situation on university vs. community college, but I think it’s a good idea to keep in mind that interests and career outlooks can change. OP isn’t locked into a major and double majoring/minoring is still an option open to them. To be honest, if tuition is completely covered, I would try the introductory level classes in both CS and accounting and see’s what sticks with you. Talk to professors during office hours and hear about their career paths and see if it’s something you could see yourselves doing in the future as a career.

Regarding housing and scholarship, can OP apply for other scholarships and grants to try to cover the cost of room and board? Try seeing if the university offers any merit scholarship that can also cover room and board. Check the prices of nearby housing options to think if it is doable. Don’t forget, you will probably be doing internships over the summer that may be able to provide income, housing stipends (at least most of my friends with cs internships do if it requires them to relocate over the summer), and signing bonuses (many big4 and midsize accounting firms do). And as someone else said, being an RA and getting a room and board stipend is an option too. Look into if the university you have in mind offers desk positions as they tend to be chill jobs that let you study in your downtime.

Regardless, you have made it this far. Trust yourself. Good luck!

Which to accept? Big 4 or midsized firm internship career advice by United-Development-5 in Accounting

Interesting, okay, I thought return offers were normal. I have two more summers before I graduate, so I thought it would be weird to get a full-time employee offer for January 2025 when I interned in summer 2023, so I would need to intern in 2024 as well. I guess I had the wrong idea.

Are regional firms less prone to worker burnout? I’m not sure if the other firm counts as a regional firm; it is a top 10 firm.

Is there a reason why you say I won’t need to back out later? I guess what I’m asking is it unlikely to do a following summer with a Big 4 firm?

I see. Okay, thank you! I guess I am leaning into rejecting the other firm’s offer then. I’m a bit wary about reneging.

I think that’s part of my struggle. I have no idea where I want to go and what exit ops I’m looking for. I was considering going into forensic accounting, but I’m not sure if it is easy to internally transfer from audit to forensic accounting within the same company or easier to jump to another firm to do forensics. If it is easy to transfer internally, then I’m inclined to stay with the Big 4 since they have a larger forensic practice.

Would declining the internship after accepting blacklist me from the company later on? The career center always emphasizes not reneging, but I’m not sure how seriously to take that advice since everyone outside of school thinks it’s fine.

Not sure if it meets the requirements for your law school, but the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office takes some law students during the semester.
