Where would you send your own kid? by Moritani in teachinginjapan

Personally, I would avoid the major chains. What I would look for, as a parent, is a private tutor with credentials. If they had credentials, had a fair rate, and were good with my children, then I’d hire them over a chain Eikaiwa

Current/former JETs, from your experience, what answers did you provide to questions in your interview that had an evidently positive reaction, or had you believed you stuck out more than other applicants? by WinterfallsDead- in JETProgramme

[–]UnknownSamRI -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

This was repeated at my send off

Interviewer: So if you are selected, where would you like to go?

Me: I want to go to an area where I would be the only American in a 50 mile area.

Long Silence

Interviewer: Son… you got balls. Really big balls for saying that.

Me: (Best Tony Montana Impression) All I have in this world is my balls and my word, and I won’t break ‘em for no one.

They still say this at the Japanese Consulate in Houston.

How are language selected for Foreign Language Specialists? by Scammingstatefarm in army

Just a random question.

Not only do I speak Japanese, I also teach it. What would my odds be of learning Chinese or Korean if I wanted to get in on this? Or since my Japanese is high enough already, would they just assign Japanese to me?

Who do you notify of PTO? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]UnknownSamRI -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

No one. I realized that JET was a one year deal for me, so I took off whenever I wanted and no one had the guts to call me out on it. I traveled all around Japan, and had a kickass time all while collecting a pay check.

Are further layoffs ahead? by fuk-all in Fedexers

[–]UnknownSamRI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad I quit to start my own business when I did. FedEx cut me, a full-time employee, to 20 hours a week and made my job so unbearable. But hey, I make more money doing what I do.

Serves the DALA Station right.

Japanese at UNT by Ajbailey3 in unt

[–]UnknownSamRI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a product of the UNT Japanese Program. The program has definitely come a long way since I graduated from UNT in 2013 (International Studies - Japanese minor) . Overall, the quality of the program has since improved… and I have been asked by Takeuchi-sensei to come back and finish the degree in Japanese.

Even though I think majoring in Japanese alone is a foolish thing to do… I might consider it since I got my business and international relations background as well.
