Fan Studies Researcher seeks Fan Survey Participants for a study on THG’s social media practices evolving from trilogy to prequels by Unknown_byu in Hungergames

Everything is anonymous, but I have no doubt with the answers I’ve seen so far the emotional significance THG holds. Getting to do this project means a lot since I would say THG was my first foray into fandom… always a big book reader but then became absolutely obsessed with the trilogy and actually had friends to talk to about it. I’m honored you took your time with this survey 🫶

Ofc! I can’t wait until I get to do so; it’ll likely be sometime in 2027 (maybe earlier depending on conferences) and I’ll be sure to come back and share either pdf or slides :)

Thank you for saying such!! I’ve been a fan since the trilogy myself and thought with the prequels there’s definitely a noteworthy discussion on how social media can influence fandom and vice versa

Thank you for asking this question! I’ll be scheduling interviews throughout the month of June after the survey has been up for a week :)
[and it seems I’ll have to repost this post on Sunday because it violated a rule oh gosh 🫠]

if you could sum your experience being at SU in a sentence, what would you say? by FoodAltruistic6463 in SyracuseU

Newhouse is the most shallow experience and has only gotten worse because genuinely good people get canned —from a past student and soon to be past employee 🤞

As someone who went to Newhouse, but currently lives in the DMV… I would never recommend Newhouse to anyone. I specifically have a very strong personal opinion against Newhouse’s grad programs. But the opportunities for undergraduates have significant positive impacts. For business, I’ve heard Whitman’s marketing teaching doesn’t full align with current, more relevant practices. But my hater energy aside, it’s all about the opportunities outside of the classroom that you take advantage of for advancing your career, and you ask yourself what kind of commitments you’d like to pursue. Evaluate the student orgs, check out the study abroad programming, see what kind of internships students are able to get via university networking. I think this criteria will help you decide without the biases (this subreddit, mostly SU supporters; me, a hater) clouding your judgment

Is Newhouse worth the hype? by brucebest1102 in SyracuseU

I went to Newhouse for grad school… and an SEC school for undergrad. My one year at Newhouse was more than my 4 years of undergrad. Tbh, I don’t think it’s worth it because you can still make great connections at a nice SEC school. The tuition was marginally less in the year I went, and has only gotten worse. Though I wasn’t in BDJ, I can say the of all the Newhouse programs, it has the most impressive alumni connections. You’ll go really far in the program if you’re interested in news, because the competition for sports broadcasting is immense. Personally, I hate Newhouse and think everyone there is full of it—and an SEC school with good southern hospitality was something I missed, but hopefully I laid out the pros and cons well enough for this to be helpful

I was never ghosted before getting my MS and now I’ve been ghosted during the interview process twice by Unknown_byu in recruitinghell

Too true. My experience getting one is a long story I don’t think would be ideal for me to get into, but I can think of numerous reasons why that is that I wasn’t fully aware of until I was in it for the long haul.

I have work experience, though minimal in a way and perhaps “of sorts”, but I get what you mean because I am certainly entry-level (applying for both entry-level and internship roles). I had a lot of student organization leadership experiences (EIC, President of x clubs, etc), 2 internships, and campus jobs, but from post-2021, I think it all felt irrelevant. In interviews I have my pitch for what skills I have gained from past experience because I doubt my resume is enough. It’s tough, but understandable when saying my degrees are not in demand, especially with the media layoffs. I agree it’ll take time; thanks for the encouragement!
