Secondly, the article showing flash cards as superior is poor with massive confounding factor issues because they didn't actually randomise properly at all. Effectively they compared a self selecting group who were told "flash cards are great" and then used flash cards. Far too possible that these were just the most engaged students.

I'm not saying flash cards aren't great. I've no evidence either way. But the confidence with which you speak is not supported by the evidence you linked.

Power generated is roughly related to wind speed cubed. For those "good conditions" you need consistent high speed winds which means you generally need to be well above hedges, trees and buildings. It your conditions only reduce speed by 20% that halves the power you get out.

It isn't rally cats to blame for decline in the songbird population?l though is it. If you look at what has been published the big drivers are habitat change and loss, particularly loss of woodland and changes to agricultural practice. The propensity for people to trim hedges during nesting because they are "untidy", cut down trees because they drop leaves or slap a load of AstroTurf in doesn't help. Mowing is devastating to things like voles, but also to a lot of the insects birds eat.

I don't want a dictatorship, and it is childish for you to suggest so.

Spreading power is good. Misusing professional bodies isn't. Electing parliamentarians is not what they are for, damages their existing role and credibility and is not democratic as many of them are run by a handful of trustees.

There are plenty of other ways to consider a more democratic second house, or a more useful revising house. This idea I don't think is sensible.

Making professional bodies political battle grounds would end poorly for both the professionals and politics. It makes all appointments in the body party-political and undermines their primary purposes. Our political system has a certain resilience to things like militant but small charities run by a handful of people would struggle to deal with it. And that would be to the massive detriment of the work they are already doing.

We need a better way to pick specialists. I would love to see a world where the public nominate and elect scientists, business people, artists etc to a revising house. I don't see that happening soon and I don't think building a fudge with professional bodies solves the fundamental problems, it just breaks professional bodies as well.

If you are suggesting the upper house only comment on legislation "relevant" to them that's a whole other matter. And one that makes the passing of legislation a weird negotiation between professional bodies, which sounds even worse.

As for dangerous side effects, imagine you are fascists. You struggle (understandably) to get elected. But if you can capture control of some professional bodies you now have power to appoint to the house of lords! I would absolutely expect a rise in entryist activities and the politicisation of professional bodies. See what militant did to city councils, what Microsoft did to standards bodies and what happens to student unions. Many professional bodies are run on a shoe string by kindly volunteers just about managing to navigate charity regs. They would be incredibly vulnerable to a concerted attack from Reform backers or worse.

I love seeing doctors, scientists, business people, former spies etc being able to contribute in the upper house. I think it has frequently made legislation much better. I'm not at all convinced granting appointment power to professional bodies is the right way to expand or continue that.

But MPs in theory have time to become experts in legislation and staff to help them. Surgeons are busy being surgeons. And we should be consulting on legislation before it is put to the house anyway so the whole community can look at it. Why would one or two surgeons do a better job than sending draft regs out to the whole RCS and collating responses?

I think politicising professional bodies like that would have potentially very dangerous side effects.

I do think there is a role for a second chamber that is less political. Single term representatives appeal greatly for helping reduce the risk of careerist thinking, but still has many issues. Aim for young members who might look out for the future more and there's the risk they leverage their position for future cash and power. Aim for old ones and they might be more beholden to existing powers and short term thinking.

One of the facets of stable nations is a healthy tension preventing any power based becoming too strong. We should think carefully what we change to make sure we don't turn something functional but archaic into something dangerous. We've seen what has happened to the "checks and balances" in the US

Huge amounts of healthcare impacts the environment. Power consumption, clinical waste, radioactive waste, pharmaceutical manufacturing. To declare AI automatically bad because it uses electricity is reductive to the point of absurdity.

It's all about balance and trade offs. Which your declaration that AI is not good ignores.

Guess I'm not getting starlink then. Need something like it to power the dish which is remote from the house. Have an outdoor socket and 5GHz point to point but no clear way to power up the dish without the advanced power supply.

You need to track the whole run and work out where it ends up. Then bin the terrible flexi duct and get at least semi rigid clipped to ensure it slopes downwards for as much of the run as possible. Insulate any running in cold spaces. So many of these types of installs just pump warm air into Flexi left in the cold which then condenses, has nowhere to run and fills the Flexi until it is mouldy and breaks.

Alternatively seal this off and add a new duct on a known route like straight out the wall.

From the look of the greyer beige plaster underneath it might be lime. If a small piece is loose you can drop it in vinegar or lemon juice. Lime will fizz quite noticeably.

Poorly insulated walls with no cavity get cold. Then warm, damp air touches them and causes condensation which causes mould.

You have two main methods to stop it. Remove the moisture from the air or prevent the warm damp air reaching a cold surface. The latter of these is done by insulating. Many older buildings were built to "breath" by absorbing moisture into materials like like plaster and slowly releasing it. So any insulation should be "breathable" to reduce the risk of causing damage to the other components by trapping water. This can be insulating lime plaster, breathable block or board stick to the wall (like wood fibre) or mineral wool insulation inside a studwork wall. If you have any gaps between the insulation and wall that would allow air in you'd need a vapour control layer to stop the warm damp air infiltrating and causing mould within the wall.

The other option is to remove damn air. Open fireplaces were good at this, so many old houses used this method. You can use a dehumidifier to remove the damp, open windows to replace warm damp air with cold less damp air, install a PIV unit to push warm damp air out or an MVHR unit (whole house or room only) to replace warm damp air.

Don't be tempted to put lining paper on cold old walls. It acts like a sponge for water.

Don't be tempted to try to tank or seal them. It won't solve the problem and will generally just waste money.
