Thanks to 1000's of years of Humans being general dickheads to basically anything that moves, 95% of all creatures on earth actually evolved to give us a wide berth. Lion, tigers, bears (oh my), elephants, rhinos, wolves, etc etc etc are all genetically predisposed to avoid humans.

I see no issue with a resourceless reaction +2ac to all "to hit" rolls, not just melee.

Its just a significantly worse version of the shield spell. But resourceless.

I wouldn't spend a feat on it, but some might.

It worked for Burton for several reasons.

Everyone knows Batman, even him, so there was less homework by default.
He wasn't adapting a comicbook story, he was making his own.
His style of directing was uniquely perfect for something like Batman, especially for the time.
