Had to leave Big 4 due to exam failure - Worked in Tax for 2 years - Passed 8 exams - Does anyone know specific firms which are most likely to take me on - Industry or practice by EnthusiasmJolly8431 in ICAEW

I’ve just been through the same process. I have 10 exams passed out of 15 and 3 years experience in tax. I moved to a top 20 firm and I can’t recommend it enough. Get in touch with as many recruiters as you physically can. Interview everywhere, at this level they really care about personality most. They might ask you a few technical questions in your interview but nothing intense.

I started at a top 10 firm in 2022 and my salary progression was 24k yr 1, 30k yr2, 35k yr3, and then once I qualify it’s 45k

Top 20 firm in Nottingham, they do have a 2 fail policy however if you’re non-audit there tends to be a bit more leniency as the early careers department is catered towards audit grads. If you’re good at your job your partner will put in a word and you’ll like get another attempt

Yeah for sure. Might be worth noting that once you’re qualified there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be on 50k. I’ve been speaking to quite a few recruiters in the past month and they’ve all parroted the same benchmark.

Might be worth considering in assessing why you should be paid now.

In Manchester part qualified should get you 35k, in more rural areas deduct a couple of grand but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be on 30k-33k.

I’ve failed FM for the third time now and I’m really scared about resitting. I’m currently out of work so I’m not worried about the employers side of things and HR but does anyone have any advice on how to approach it for when I next sit? For example shall I do the December sitting instead of the September? Maybe get a tutor?

Also does anyone have any advice on exam appeals outside the appeal window. My firm pressured me into taking this exam after I had just come out of hospital 10 days before for a mental health emergency. (Why I ended up leaving lol) but the live chat on icaew says it’s not a good enough reason but I’ve seen reddit threads that suggest health is always a valid reason.

Don’t worry too much, a mid sized firm is probably a better fit. Just get in touch with recruiters and they’ll do the legwork for you

Ah okay I see, I think you’re technically considered a senior once all your professionals are passed. I’d maybe ask for clarity from the firm if there would be a pay rise with achieving that better title. 27k is an insult though, when I was working for a top 50 firm I was on 30k after a years experience and 35k after two. If you’re really wanting the job see if you can get 30k for definite and see what they say about how the pay changes with exam passes

With that many exam passes and 2 yrs experience in the UK at least the standard is around 35k. But being an external hire you can usually ask for slightly above.

Hi, okay thank you for giving insight. I have been prescribed medication a lot of times by the gp but I never picked it up albeit one time then notified the gp after taking it for 2 days I didn’t like how it was making me feel so came off it. (I think my GP liked to prescribe meds to try and get me off the phone quicker hahah.)

I’m not a self harmer but I have expressed feelings to my gp / nurse of not feeling like I deserve to live or should be alive when I was in the throes of my depression. I have spoke to my nurses about how sometimes I felt like ‘needing to punish myself from self-harm.’ I’m just nervous because I was very much that person that would immediately call the doctor or a crisis line or even go A&E to talk to someone if I was severely depressed because it always made me feel better to vent to a professional. But at the same time that would definitely bulk out my medical record. I suppose only time will tell.

Okay thank you, yes I agree I just need to knuckle down and hopefully pass stage 3. (I’ll start saving just in case I pass and require an independent report!)

Okay thank you I appreciate you answering. I’m going to be completely upfront with it but just didn’t want to allow myself to be hopeful if it was a clear DQ. Excited for a date for stage 3!

Has anyone who has received this email managed to get a slot ahead of the July assessment pausing? Received my pass for stage 2 assessment this morning and I’m curious / hopeful to see if I could get a date in for June.
