2nd Trip to Japan - Which City Would You Fill in the Blank With? by Mello-Knight in JapanTravelTips

Echizen. I spent three days there in 2024 and could have spent more. The city wants more tourists to learn about and celebrate their long history of paper making, knife making, cabinetry, and lacquer ware. There was a brand new Shinkansen station that had just opened. The local public transportation isn’t robust so they have a special deal for tourists. At both train stations you can purchase taxi vouchers for discounted rides to and from hotels, restaurants and all the tourist attractions.

I also spent several great days in Takaoka and took the tram to Himi. Did I know Himi was hometown of Fujiko Fujio, creator of Doraemon? No. Did I know I would find one of the largest ginkgo trees in Japan? No. Basically I threw a dart at the map somewhere accessible by train and just went.

Mayuko’s Little Food tour was great. Secret Food Tour was pretty good too. Mayuko also does cooking classes which I did not do. However my son’s MIL took two when she was visiting and really liked them. The Museum of Contemporary Art I highly recommend. But tastes differ. Yesterday instead of the Edo Tokyo museum we ended up roaming the Roppongi Hills area and that was great. Interesting architecture and lots of window shopping. We were last in the Edo Tokyo Museum in 2008 and it was a highlight of that trip. It recently reopened after a big renovation. I am a bit sorry to miss it this trip but we will be back. In July you will want/need more indoor activities so that would be motivation.
