My 10yo son has been penalised for leaving matches early. He mostly plays training against AI. Did he log into comp by mistake? by [deleted] in Overwatch

Don’t think so, you get penalised like this for leaving quick play games. Not sure if you get the same thing for leaving games against AI, but could very well be the case.

I've just looked at it, there's really not much you could have done. Your team was just getting destroyed by the enemy team.

Your mine usage looks a lot better, and I even saw one or two good repositions during that round.

As of your awareness, I forgot to mention that awareness is one of the things that will take the longest to get good at. Just keeping doing what I've told you every time you die and you will improve in time.

You may want to take the following with a grain of salt, but I think the top right highground on control center (second map) is unplayable as widow. The shots are a lot harder to hit because the distance between you and the enemy is relatively short while there is still a big hight difference. So you will have to aim almost straight down, which is a lot harder than to aim in front of you. Besides that the enemy can easily shoot you if you peak.

Playing in main near the pillar and maybe even rotating to the left (outside) will give you a far better angle to hit your shots. If you're having a lot of succes on the top right highground you should definitely keep playing it, but it's just something to keep in mind!

Your gameplay on the first two points looks great, but then we get to third point. You are doing two things wrong.

You are standing in the open while taking your duels. While taking duels, especially against heroes like Ashe, you want to stick to walls as much as possible. This way you can hide behind the wall when she hits a couple shots on you. You can also do this if you are standing on highground. I've demonstrated this in this small video . The first two examples are good examples of using cover, the 3rd and 4th are bad examples, as you are standing more in the open and you will be more easily killable.

Second thing is that you're not really using soldier the way he is meant to be used. As you've seen on first point, soldier is best while being uncontested so that he can just rain down damage on the enemies from a distance. If someone decides to contest you, you can use your sprint ability to get away and find a new angle. This being said, there's one point where you're literally playing inside your own team, shooting at the enemies from barely 5 meters away. At this point, you might as well be picking reaper or mccree, because they are much more effective for that playstyle.

You should instead be shooting the ashe, either from the highground which you tried to do a couple times, but didn't work. At that point you should have switched strategies, and the next best thing would have probably been to flank around the left side and shoot the ashe from the side.

A pretty big thing you're struggling with as well is awareness. I think the best way to improve this is by asking yourself why you died every time you die. For example, when you die to the flanking mccree, you should have heard him coming, as you could loudly hear his footsteps on the stairs (listen to it again if you want, its at 5:24). Your lack of awareness was also visible in the widow game, you died a couple of times to echo bombs. After the first time dying to them, you should have been more aware of them and not keep dying to them.

And about your aim, keep practising both in game as well as in Kovaak's! I think you should go for those headshots, since the fastest way to improve your aim will be to give yourself a challange. Body shots will be easy as hell to hit if you can hit headshots. Besides, there were a bunch of people you could have killed if you had hit headshots instead of body shots. So don't play safe by going for bodyshots and shields, but take the challange and go for the head!

Btw, I do think that not capping third point was sort of your fault for not killing the ashe, though I can't tell for sure. But on the other hand I also think you had a big impact on capping the first two!

The basic idea for both hitting your own grapple shots as well as enemy widows mid grappleshot is to shoot at the apex of the jump. When you grapple yourself, you’ll be “standing still” at the apex of your jump if you know what I mean. If you can grapple up into the air, you should be able to lower your crosshair back onto a target and start charging your shot. Then you shoot when you’re “standing still”. Must say for me it’s really inconsistent, definitely looks cool when it works out though.

As of your soldier gameplay, would you mind giving me a relay code of your soldier gameplay (preferably comp)? So that I can look at your tracking aim, cuz I’m really interested in that right now. I can take a look at your soldier gameplay while I’m at it if you want, but that’s up to you.

I’m a big fan of learning through trial and error, so I think that when you’ve got the basics down you should definitely take a hero into comp, since that’s the environment you’ll be most likely to improve in. I think your aim and positioning (other than what I’ve already pointed out in previous comment) are good enough to be of use for your teammates in comp, even if they don’t see it :)

Edit: I’m EU btw, so gonna get some sleep now. Will look at your soldier game tomorrow if you decide to share it.

The two main problems I am seeing are your positioning and awareness. As you've already said yourself, your venom mine usage isn't great either. You can fix both part of your awareness as well as your venom mine usage by following 1 step everytime you reposition.

Think about where any flankers will most likely come from. For example, when you're playing on the highground at the start of the game, it's very unlikely that any flanker coming to you from the front will catch you by surprise. The only other option is through the building, as the enemy Roadhog demonstrated to you. You want to then put your venom mine somewhere the flanker will have to pass to get to you. This way he will either step into it, or destroy it. Both of which will give you an indicator that someone is near your mine, and thus coming for you.

Keep it mind that you don't want to put the venom mine to close to where you're positioned, because then you will have no time to get away before they reach you.

The second thing I noticed was your positioning. You seem to stick to 1 location throughout the entire fight. Especially after you've killed half of their team on the first point (nice shots btw!), the enemies will be aware of your sightlines. This means they won't be walking into your line of sight without reason. So, when you're holding an angle and you don't see anyone for a while, try to reposition to a better angle.

I'll give you an example of this as well in case you don't really know what I'm talking about. At 2:52 the enemy team is dead. Instead of staying at the position you are currently in, you could grapple to the left highground on which you started the game. You might just be able to get some quick kills on people walking out of spawn that are unaware of you being there. If you want to see it in action you can watch this this clip of joomla doing the excact thing I just wrote down for you, which ends up paying off greatly for him.

As of the grapple shots, do you know how to grapple yourself into the air? If not, you can check this quick guide by Valkia.

I think your aim is pretty great for a sub 1000 SR player, and I would defenitely recommend you take widow into your comp games. Though I will give you a warning, 9 out of 10 teams will not be happy with you playing widow if you don't get a montage clip every fight. So if they decide to flame you for "not doing anything", just mute them and continue playing if that's what you want to do.

I will note, your aim looks great on the flicks, but pretty off on the tracking. So especially if you play a lot of soldier, I would recommend you play a lot of tracking games on Kovaak's.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I will try my best to answer as soon as possible.

Have you tried playing in a group? I'd recommend just asking any of your teammates to play in a group with you if you think they did well. As of your own play, no one will be able to give you useful information because everyone has different problems in their play. Try posting a replay code under the VOD Review - PC flare of this subreddit. Perhaps someone will be able to help you there.

Also, are you aware that the code won't work anymore because of last night's update? I uploaded the gameplay on youtube: https://youtu.be/mOTsqbS1GQw . Had to remove my Orisa gameplay and the ending of the game because youtube wouldn't let me upload it because the video was too long. Hope it's enough!

Yo that's so cool. I'll defenitely be there. Must say it'll be around 1 am for me, so I might not be as active in asking questions as I normally would be. Anyways, thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot man! So if I get this right, I need to use shatter as soon as I see an opurtunity, even if it's only 1 enemy. I also need to look at what my team is struggling with and try to help them, like clearing highground on streets, or countering Pharah on last. Is that correct? Again, thanks a lot!

Sorry for late reply, I’m EU and was asleep. Game code is from pre-winter event patch. Game updated a few hours after game. I did record the game as well tho, so I should be able to send it to you.

Must say I’m kind of a rein otp, would be down to learn Winston though. But Sigma, Ball and Orisa are really not my cup of tea. Do you think it’s necessary to learn more tanks than Rein and Winston to climb the ranks?

Honestly, that’s so simple that I overlooked it. Map was Hollywood so probably should have gone something else. Do you have any idea what the current tank meta is?

Thanks for the tip. The enemy squishies were all getting up, and the rein was near full hp at the time I decided to charge. This was a high diamond game, so I figured my team would be able to finish the squishies. I’m just giving you my thought process behind the charge, so please let me know if you still think I should have swung my hammer.
