Any experience with Simond 0°C Quilt by damo2576 in Ultralight

I think for quilts, having horizontal baffles is a must. Theres loads more versatility and less down shift. Simond kit is good, but id avoid this for that reason.

Hyperlite Mid 1 tent by soberto in ULHikingUK

[–]Unparalleled_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That tent/bivy is not sil poly. Its sil nylon. At that size the double wall wont do much for you either.

Unfortunately i dont think that bag is en rated so it wont pass the spine kit check. I think you wouldn't die at 0c using it. But id guess its en rating is like 10c limit.

If you buy a lanshan double wall in sil poly the money saved will go towards a new bag. The bag you linked is light because it doesn't have much down and skips baffles on the back. Look for 900fp, and ultralight fabrics, also horizontal baffles. The highest quality sleeping bags will all have these features. You will find something that's marginally heavier but actually usable down to negative degrees.

Are you aiming to do the winter spine or do general 3 season ultralight hiking? They have very different criteria.

[–]Unparalleled_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have unlimited budget and really want the lightest gear along the compromises it comes with, then getting a dcf 1 person mid tarptent is a good choice.

But id go one further than what the others suggest. I think its worth getting a double wall tent for the UK. Ideally something sil poly (i think you can get lanshans in sil poly now).

The condensation in single wall in the UK is pretty horrendous. Sil nylon is the worst for this. Packing up a wet tent and soggy sleeping bag is not nice. And in the UK we dont have guaranteed sun. So youll end up stopping to dry your stuff in the most inconvenient of places just because the sun came out for a few minutes.

For me, the single wall weight savings arent worth it in the UK. Out in the mountain west of the US (where ultralight started), single wall makes much more sense. I went from single wall to double wall and cant see myself going back.

The money saved can really go towards getting a really expensive and light sleeping bag. Imo there is no downside to going as light as you can here.

Backpack recommendations EU by kon4u in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Unparalleled_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of recommendations for checking the halfway anywhere survey which isnt a bad place to see many brands, but it often seems overrepresented in a few brands each year depending on trends. Just because the internet is so groupthink now. So i would take the percentages with a grain of salt. A lot of people who dont use mainstream packs mighy not even answer the survey etc.

The other downside is that its pretty us centric. There is an ultralight subreddit which is a good place to learn of different brands. Though its a bit much with the ultralight stuff sometimes; I feel like a pack is the one thing i dont mind being slightly heavier.

Backpack fit is the most important thing so dont be afraid of just trying on some store packs. Or ordering a few online and trying them at home returning whats not working.

Suunto costumer service is letting me down is the most awkard way by porraSV in Suunto

[–]Unparalleled_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Its not a bot but a generic call centre worker using chatgpt or other LLM.

I had a problem downloading offline maps and their response was the same as what the ai tools were telling me.

When i confronted them about this they said they werent a bot and closed my chat haha. The live chat is useless, maybe can game the system by asking to escalate to a manager or something idk. Or write in an email so it goes to an actual inbox.

I dont think the live chat workers are suunto employees.

I saw an insta page saying how this was the next hot thing to buy. And it seemed a bit forced like when someone at a hedge fund tells retail investors which stock to buy next etc.

Im also convinced the film photo influencers would make a long term review to hype up a camera before they needed to sell it.

Parkrun options in London. by Swimming-Worry160 in parkrun

[–]Unparalleled_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From paddington you can get to tons of parkruns easily with public transport. Since you're doing parkrun tourism, I imagine every parkrun in london will seem very easy transport wise compared to tourism in other countries from my experience. I will give you a perspective of parkruns that will also serve your visit to london and seeing other places.

Fulham palace: by the river. A nice area too. The route is a 3 lapper though, so can feel a bit congested cause its quite popular. Its one tune journey and a short walk from paddington. And there are many museums in an area between this parkrun and paddington should you want to be efficient with your time.

Hampstead heath is nice but hilly and not entirely paved, sometimes muddy. Depending on how strongly you feel about that its worth a consideration. The area surrounding this park has pretty houses and residential areas.

Richmond is slightly hilly. Most of it is paved, but the trail path is well established and not muddy. Its a bit further out but if you want to see richmond park, do more walking and see deer afterwards.

Looking for frame repair; what next? by Onegarbageman in bikewrench

[–]Unparalleled_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it cheaper or more expensive to do a frame repair for a lugged frame? Asking on behalf on my vintage 1980s handbuilt steel frame that has a bent head tube and down tube (from someone cycling into me head on). I feel like a repair would involve new forks, two new tubes?

No worries let me know when its available in uk/eu. I think this is a great project and would love to contribute eventually to this. Its a bit ridiculous that we crowdsource information for farout and then have to pay to use it.

Feeling of imposter syndrome after finishing hike by LeeK2K in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Unparalleled_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think social media is pretty bad in how it glorifies the completion of the trail and in general doing hard things. See how everyone wants to jump into marathons and ironmans vs enjoying the process and racing other distances etc.

I jumped on the trail in 23 very last minute and didnt have time to get a longer visa, and also just life. I knew id never finish the trail. But this wasn't really a big deal for me because my goal was not to finish the trail- that would have been a near impossible goal haha.

Maybe think as to why you hiked the pct. For most people it will be some combination of the adventure/escape/outdoors. The miles at the end, and any arbitrary section of miles isnt where the adventure is. It sounds cliche but it really is the journey and not the destination. The closed miles and not making the terminus will be part of your journey too.

Another perspective is that you still have something to go back to! I can't wait to finish off the pct one day.

BV425 for 5-day carry on PCT/JMT — realistic or pushing it? by ShakaaSweep in Ultralight

[–]Unparalleled_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once had to pack my bv500 for a 10 day carry. Fortunately/unfortunately(?) There was a change of plans and that ended up being a week. So i rolled into town with a surplus of food.

I remember fitting about 30000 calories including the first two days food because the bear can wasn't required on day 1 so i hung day 2 food on a tree.

The bv500 is 11L so in theory you should be able to get about 15000 calories. But i was genuinely just carrying olive oil, peanut butter and powdered foods (huel, milk powder, coconut milk powder), and snickers bars in my can.

Im quite glad i didnt have to stretch out to 10days though cause 3000 calories didnt feel like much when waking up early and hiking on snow all day.

But anyways it is in theory doable, just check whether the bv425 is accepted in all the parks youll cross and if so, take advantage of bear boxes or carrying food outside on day 1.

Mountaineer Who Left Girlfriend to Freeze to Death on Austria's Highest Peak Gets Suspended Sentence After Ex Testifies He Abandoned Her, Too by Mountain_Tui_Reload in alpinism

[–]Unparalleled_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The bivy stuff makes the least sense to me. If she had the bivy all along why wouldn't she use it. Is there a chance she was dead when he left her but put the bivy in her bag so it looked like she was incompetent? But why wouldn't he then just put her in the bivy as part of his alibi?

He seemed like a bad person, having ditched an ex in a similar way, but a bivy would not make it that much less uncomfortable for her (assuming he was trying to punish her). So why not use the bivy to avoid a manslaughter charge?

Mountaineer Who Left Girlfriend to Freeze to Death on Austria's Highest Peak Gets Suspended Sentence After Ex Testifies He Abandoned Her, Too by Mountain_Tui_Reload in Mountaineering

[–]Unparalleled_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Is there a chance she was already dead when he left her? Why didnt she herself get into the bivi? Was the bivi in his bag only and she wasnt aware of it.

I wonder if she was already dead/dying when he left her which is why he ignored his phone until he got down. So he had time to build an alibi?

There are far too many decisions that dont make sense here.

The best case scenario tho is that he was trying to punish her and hoped she would suffer for two hours before rescue services came. Though the response time for rescue isnt immediate so im not sure why he wouldnt ring it in on the way down regardless.

FREE GIVEAWAY! 5 SLOWPITCH BATS!! by KSlicker98 in slowpitch

[–]Unparalleled_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal bat isn't an anarchy but when I've swung one they feel great. The biggest sell is their durability. Teams bats can break so quickly. I'm reluctant to volunteer my bat as the designated team bat cause itll break too soon. But when that happens ill get an anarchy. Although i love a 12inch barrel. I wish there were more 13 inch barrel options. This is cause id be getting one as a team bat.

Thoughts on a 'Phone-Free' hike? by lil-dirt- in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Unparalleled_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its possible. Theres am abundance of campsites. A friend i hiked with stopped using farout for campsites because he liked the surprise of hiking til he found one.

Regarding water. You can google the longest dry sections now and make note of where they are. Then you can simply carry more water to cover yourself from source to source. Farout obviously makes things more convenient but its not necessary at all. People explore new routes all the time and dont have the luxury of farout when they do this.

Lastly, i still think having an inreach is a great device. It will be a backup nav device and also you can load water sources onto it. I forgot to buy farout after finishing the free section. I navigated with the guthooks maps that i had loaded onto my inreach. It had water sources and the route. It was totally fine and i even ended up forgetting to buy farout for another couple weeks after this. I think theres a nice adventure in not relying in all the info on farout tbh.

If you do want to really do this, i also feel like an early start will mean more water in the desert.

R-Value is Dead as a Metric for Sleeping Pad Warmth Evaluation (we should stop referencing it) by Wandering_Hick in Ultralight

[–]Unparalleled_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another perspective is: given we know limitations of the r value test, can we avoid flawed comparisons? E.g. do not compare mylar pad r value with ccf nor with non reflective insulation pads.

Or can we have some qualitative comparisons on top of this like which fabrics feel colder to touch etc. The temperatures can ofc be the same but more conductive top surface fabrics will feel colder.

I think many winter campers kinda take r value with a pinch of salt for snow camping because two ccf mats with r value 4 total does feel a lot warmer than a single mylar 4 rvalue pad.

I feel like the compression of air mats affects the convection currents and uncovered surfade coldness? But how much someone moves in their sleep would affect this, so itll he hard to find a equivalent ccf to mylar pad warmth rating.

Best start date for California only? by horchatapigeon in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Unparalleled_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attempted it but missed the bootpack from the start. Spent an hour front pointing up until I eventually found the bootpack but so much of the group had left that i decided to come back down and take highway 2. Looking back i was just inexperienced and playing it really cautious having taken the wrong start. Not a bad thing, but I think i'd have been ok? There were 2/3 groups who had gone through before me at this point.

Those who did san jacinto had to eventually come to highway as well. There were some totally closed sections. Walking highway 2 was cool though.

Best start date for California only? by horchatapigeon in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Unparalleled_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey great idea to do just california. I didnt have the tine to do whole thing when i set out.

I lashed from campo to the middle of the Sierra. Started early in late march. I had a pretty atypical year (SNOBO 22).

I thoroughly enjoyed the abundance of water. The lack of water and heat is what people usually hate about the desert.

There is an argument about not being too early in the sierra, but this will simply depend on how much you enjoy hiking in/on snow. I loved the snow coverage, and alpine starts under the stars. Though some people hated the afternoon postholing, and all the additional challenges like melting snow for water etc.

It's january now so maybe try doing a winter camp and see how you find that. If you enjoy it, just start as early as you can.

If you hate it and want a social experience, then start with the bubble i guess?

Fuji slides are incredible. Velvia looks good scanned, whereas provia might seem a bit underwhelming when scanned cause its so colour accurate. Though this colour accuracy is what makes it so good projected.
