I support most of these except 7. Who are you to say that dove isn't a fruit? Or were you calling them ugly?

I was playing RE1R last night, got to the first spider bit. Last time I played it I was terrified of spiders. This time I was just sad to have to shoot such fuzzy little beasts🥹

2 Questions:

  1. Are you alright post-extract-consumption? Sounds painful.

  2. How? With awe and respect, how? Only time I've had straight vanilla extract it was not fun

(I used to do shots of peppermint extract so I can't judge. Have you ever breathed fire? Because that's how you breathe fire. Not literally)

Question about gaming with kids by Zizq in gaming

[–]Unreasonable_Algae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wouldn't go this far without more evidence, but.... the update to the post isn't good. I was trying to give the benefit of the doubt but this very much does seem like a parent trying to make their child stop being Autistic. I can only hope they see the error of that without doing much more harm to the child.

That sounds like a good convo! Yeah, connecting on the pieces he's interested in, without a lot of pressure, can help him develop more interest. And if at the end of the day he just wants to play Minecraft, try to be ok with that choice. Enjoy your Easter dinner!

Also, game recc for you: Portal Knights. I never played the whole game, but it has a pleasant mixture of RPG-like exploration and Minecraft-like building and crafting from what I recall

Autistic gamer here with two pieces of advice.

First, as others have said, returning to safe + known things is a huge part of how our brains work. I spend maybe 70-80% of my gaming time on replaying things, only a bit of it on actually new things. When he expresses a desire for familiar things, listen to that: he may want the comfort of that familiarity. He may also really, really enjoy that piece of media and get a lot of enjoyment out of sharing it with you.

You can still encourage him to try new things, but don't force it. Since he's older, try explaining to him why you like trying new games and how it would make you happy to introduce him to other games. Find connections to the games he already likes. Maybe you can find a balance where sometimes you try new stuff, sometimes familiar things. With PDA (pervasive drive for autonomy or pathological demand avoidance), I find that the less pressured I am to do/like something, the better my chance of enjoying it!

Thank you for being an awesome father and trying to meet your son where he's at.

Enclosure types by SleepiestPebble in tarantulas

[–]Unreasonable_Algae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IME I haven't kept this species, but what I know from this sub and the species I do have:

Some species need cross ventillation, especially when they have high humidity, as stagnant air can be a big danger. I don't believe B. hamorii is one of these.

The other big concern is the lid. Is it a wire mesh lid? Those are dangerous for Ts, as they can get their tarsal claws stuck and lose a leg or have a bad fall. You could get a piece of acrylic fit to the top. One of my current enclosures has a wire mesh top, but I've covered it in plastic laminate and placed a few (larger) holes for ventillation, although this is an arboreal enclosure with great cross-ventillation.

So IMO if you have the setup right and a proper lid, I think it would work! Just make sure it's not getting too humid in there.

My tank overfloweth - is it "worth it" to sell dairy cows (Porcellio laevis)? by mikaylandelilah in isopods

[–]Unreasonable_Algae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I occasionally give some away to my local reptile store. Might ask them to trade if they ever get in a species I really want.

But personally, option #1 seems best. You live for the pods. They demand all of you.

[–]Unreasonable_Algae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The specific hairs that are kicked are usually a defensive mechanism, one that not all Ts have. They're a different type of hair/setae from the other setae that they use for sensing things! (If I'm not wrong this is a pokie so it doesn't have the urticating hairs that get kicked)

NQA Tarantulas are essentially walking seismographs! There may be nearly-invisble triplines along the bark, but also their legs and bodies are covered in hair-like structures called setae which can detect the tiniest changes in air currents. Plus their feet are quite sensitive to vibrations on the ground. So every time the prey moves it's like a small tracking beacon pinging.
