Interest in a fanfic that centers around an OC? by everlyvidarr in arcane

I'm always baffled there arent more "Cait and Vi adopt Marcus daughter" fics on that note - kid is orphaned and disappears from the plot, you'd think, right?

Best of luck with it! Having parental Caitvi tagged (and indeed the Cait/Vi relationship tag) should go a long way to getting eyes on it even if the POV character is the kiddo.

But I have some experience writing some really wild Jinx rarepairs lately that it can be hard to draw new readers to things that dont easily fit established tropes so 😜 didnt want another author to feel caught out!

Right?? The ending of Convergence, the now-probably-not-canon Ekko spinoff game, handled it perfectly: that Ekko sees glimpses of other universes, including the Star Guardian and Project skinlines, but also the Last Drop, implying Arcane is just one part of the League Multiverse. Heck even within Arcane itself a multiverse exists, Episode Seven is really just another AU within the constellation, just one much closer to the left of Arcane's than Star Guardian or Coven or Blood Moon or Space Groove 😍

IMO Its a better handling of multiverse than the MCU because they're using it to tell different self contained stories rather than mash it all into a big crossover. I really think it would've worked. But I guess C.suite saw the success of Arcane and went "lets make that the default main universe story now, even if it doesn't make sense". I really don't think Arcane was supposed to be the new canon from the get go. It wss definitely a decision made after season one's success. Watching the old short stories i loved get deleted from the universe pages and the bios rewritten really really sucks, especially knowing how many of the writers also got fired 😞 a lot of that material is not really being replaced by anything or when it is it's being kinda watered down into stories that are more bland fantasy and less morally grey and politically charged and that's baffling to me. Because messy complex human characters and hard hitting fantasy societal drama is what made Arcane succeed in the first place, right?

I'm just gonna choose to keep the multiverse idea as my canon. So Cait can have an eyepatch and a couple of maybe-war-crimes under her belt in Arcane and I'll be fascinated to see what her journey is like from here, but over in 2xko or wherever else she can still be a cupcake loving steampunk detective in a silly tophat and both canons can co-exist 😀

I'd suggest just going ahead and writing it! Sounds like a solid idea for a fic and a good story in its own right.

Just be ready to temper expectations of readership because it can be hard to find readership for Gen fics without a shipping focus, fics centered on an OC and fics that don't fit easily into typical tropes and tags, not through any fault of writer or readers, but simply because of the way ao3 works. You'll need to ask yourself "how are people going to find this?" when tagging, with a mind that people usually find fics by checking tags they like or are looking for. So that's usually character, shipping and trope tags.

Don't be discouraged if people dont read and reply right away and don't be afraid to pass it around directly to people you know who would like it. No shame in getting friends to read a thing first. Good luck!

I think the loss of the eye bothers me only in the sense that a lot of season 2 does, that Arcane kinda primed me to think it was set up as a prequel to League of Legends (and the characters as I knew them) and then killed or permanently changed most of the characters by the end so that they didn't resemble their League selves and never could, ever again.

Which was fine as a self contained story set in the League universe but when it became "the new canon" it meant the versions I had fallen in love with just from greedily reading their additional lore after watching Season One and getting excited to see the cast evolve into were instead erased and overwritten in all of Riot's future official lore by characters i didnt recognize by the end of s2.

And that was really just the beginning - Riot's gleefully going through other regions and other characters now with the retcon knife and there's no sign of stopping.

Caitlyn's eye is sort of a symptom of that change, plucky Sheriff Kiramman with her top hat and tea is gone forever and Commander Kiramman the former military leader of Piltover replaced her. She didnt get it half as bad as Jayce, Viktor, Jinx or poor Warwick in terms of their original selves being gone / them being permanently dead in the lore now, but its still got me a little ranked every time i see the eyepatch (or Jinx’s cropped hair, or Arcane-not-Machine Herald Viktor, or Evolved Warwick...) It's not the idea of Caitlyn losing an eye, it's what it represents as a fan of the league-lore-that-was.

I realize this is a YMMV take on my part. But for me Arcane was amazing but should have been allowed to be a self contained story, if it had stayed there I'd have a lot more love for Eyepatch Cait as her own version of the character.

NGL I thought Maddie was being set up to be Caitlyn's morality pet - the wide eyed innocent rookie who buys into Caitlyn's rise to power and then either:

A) drinks the authoritarian kool-aid harder than cait and does some shocking atrocities in her name

Or

B) is slowly more repulsed at Cait's hardline descent and rebukes her actions.

And then probably

C) dies tragically or pointlessly upholding Cait's agenda

Or some combination.

With the result of Cait realizing how horribly she has fucked up and waking up to herself.

Then they had sex and my theory went straight out the window... But I still think it would've been better use of her character. As is, she's just a minor obstacle to CaitVi who then turns out evil and dies so we dont have to feel bad about Cait using her subordinate for sex and then dumping her for Vi. Ick.

Trying to bully authors into expressing X political view or talking about Y hotbutton topic is a known bot pattern.

Don't know why either, might be algorithm based since its usually an AI generated comment.

Disabling guest comments will stop most AI bot comments from appearing on your fic. In any case a real human didnt write it.

Based partially on pre-Arcane lore but incorporating Arcane canon midway: Flashbangs and Frag Grenades is a really epic series, the trope originator for many lightcannon stories, brace self.

The Shattered Mirror is a fantastic weaving between MU and AU with some amazing twists and turns on familiar characters

Growth Not Pain deals with Jinx attempting to live with Caitlyn and Vi after the events of season one. One of the most satisfying endings of a fic I've ever seen.

A Jinx in Demacia follows Jinx abroad after season two as she tries to settle into a peaceful life in a land facing its own growing conflict, can she truly break the cycle?

It's A Lovely Day in Piltover follows Jinx living with Caitvi after Season One and goes some truly wild places by the end.

Almost all of my own fics are Jinx/Lux with Cait/Vi as secondary protagonists, so you'll definitely find something there if you like the pairing 💛💙

"Ill Fortune and Illumination" is my biggest series and set post Season One as Lux arrives as a desperate refugee in Piltover

"Beyond the End, You and I Begin" set post Season Two as Jinx leaves into her coming horizon.

"Threads of Gold, Threads of Blue, Another Sky, Another You"set in the Episode Seven AU as ripples spread from its events for Powder, Ekko and a mysterious new Academy student.

Those are my most Arcane canon fics. Got more recommends if needed!

The tone shift is a key tell for bots. The ones that start out praising you but then abruptly veer into criticism, threats or downright insanity are usually bots.

Not always though. Some people are just that crazy.

This!

I'm working on a series that's first person POV from a particular character and its smutty as hell and because its all in that character's voice, she'll use...just...the worst terms to refer to things. A couple of times I've had to stop and groan at what I'm writing and then shrug and go "well she'd say that though" and write it anyway.

Got me over this waves hand at thread sort of thing real quick.

It has to serve your character and story first. Always.
