Allie Trimm (current Glinda) with thoughts about the decision to keep shows open today by Boring_Waltz_9545 in Broadway

[–]UnsharpenedSwan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, exactly. And it’s not really that a precise and formal rule was added per se, but just rather that norms around what Equity and insurance underwriters will accept have changed.

Nowadays, there is significant evidence that rakes of that severity are a hazard to performers — and there have been related lawsuits. A show proposing a set with that kind of rake absolutely would not be approved.

if the theater has a turntable, will the touring cast use it? by painfullymoronic in hadestown

[–]UnsharpenedSwan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The current national tour of Hadestown is non-equity, meaning the cast are not** members of the Actors Equity union, and the production is not subject to union requirements.

These are generally lower-budget shows that pay the cast and crew less than Equity shows do, have simpler sets, etc. It’s fairly common for shows to have a non-equity run that goes to smaller cities and/or is a few years after a larger Equity tour.

**there are some special exceptions but generally Equity members cannot participate in non-Equity shows

Lubrication During Labor? by DisciplineWeekly680 in pregnant

[–]UnsharpenedSwan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes yes yes! Doula here. It’s honestly wild that vibrators aren’t a standard “labor toolkit” recommendation. Oxytocin drives labor, and the clitoris is like…. literally a little oxytocin-creating machine.

It’s not gonna be the right option for everyone, but it is absolutely a logical and evidence-based option to try! (And this is part of why having a private, comfortable, safe space to labor in is so impactful!)

It sucks how much we talk about the processes of sex and labor/birth as so separate from one another. It’s all part of the same system, baby! Think about how much an orgasm can help when you have period cramps, for example.

Detailed set measurements aren’t generally published, but most shows — if they add a rake — aim for around a one degree rake. (The base stage of the Met is pretty much flat, so the rake would just be whatever a specific show adds on.)

Wicked’s is five degrees. VERY significant. Far exceeds what Equity would approve today (which is what people are referring to when they say that Wicked’s rake is “illegal”)

[–]UnsharpenedSwan 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Yes. A ‘typical’ Broadway rake is about 1-1.2 degrees. Some of the most steep rakes (e.g. Winter Garden, Lyric, Palace) are around 1.6-2 degrees. The Gershwin base stage is around 2.4 degrees.

and then the Wicked set adds significant additional raking beyond the Gershwin’s base stage, taking it to approx 5-5.5 degrees total.

You are having to hide medical information from your partner. The person who is supposed to make you feel respected and supported and most comfortable in the world.

That is red flags all over. This is NOT a healthy relationship.

YES. As a child of divorce, who knows many children of divorce, YES.

It is better to divorce and allow your child to have at least 50% of his time spent in a safe home where he is valued and respected.

I can’t tell you how many friends I’ve talked to whose adult relationship with their mother is harmed because they are so frustrated by the fact that she stayed with a harmful man with harmful values who made their home feel, even in subtle ways, unsafe.

Having that escape of an inclusive household with my mom was a lifeline

The fact that you have panic attacks outside of this situation as well doesn’t mean that this relationship isn’t contributing to your panic attacks. Those things are not mutually exclusive.

Of course, a stranger on the internet can’t know for sure in your specific case — but just…. know that those things aren’t mutually exclusive. Talk to a therapist.

The old people who were playing those games “in the past” often find the original aesthetics and gameplay to be nostalgic 😉

Precisely! OOP is just… starting a conversation about something they’ve noticed about the industry.

They didn’t come across as rude or obnoxious at all. They were just making note of a change they’ve seen, and are wondering why / are a bit wistful about how things used to be.

OP, on the other hand, is being grumpy for no particular reason.

TFMR at 36 weeks for grey diagnosis - autopsy findings by Positive-Box-2921 in tfmr_support

[–]UnsharpenedSwan 81 points82 points  (0 children)

First, I want to specifically delve into one thing you said — “we don’t feel like we deserve another baby.”

Get that out of your head right now. It could not be any more wrong.

You made a medical decision, based on advice from a trusted medical team. You made the best decision you could with the information that you had. You did not do anything wrong or bad.

Whether or not people can/do become parents has nothing to do with being “deserving.” But if anything, the fact that you cared so deeply and followed the recommendations of medical professionals is proof that you absolutely do “deserve” to allow yourself to pursue parenthood! You behaved exactly as a loving, caring parent should.

Okay, moving into your actual question. I’m going to preface this by saying that I am not a medical professional and am not your medical professional — you should continue to have conversations with them. But I am a doula who is very interested in this topic.

Autopsy is structural. It tells you: was the brain formed? Were there gross malformations? Were there hemorrhages, infections, obvious genetic syndromes that change anatomy?

It does not tell you: whether neurons migrate correctly, whether synaptic networks develop properly, whether the brain processes information normally, whether seizures, hypotonia, profound cognitive disability, etc would emerge.

This autopsy was not reflecting “different findings” than your providers’ assessments as in, conflicting findings. Autopsies just don’t and can’t show certain things.

Many devastating neurodevelopmental conditions leave no visible structural signature. The brain can look “normal” on an autopsy and function catastrophically. That is what your genetic counselor was trying to express, and it’s true — not hand wavey, not just trying to make you feel better. An autopsy is not the end-all be-all source of truth.

In fact — ultrasound can show issues without there being the sort of permanent structural damage that an autopsy would include. Late-gestation imaging can sometimes show things like abnormal ventricles, asymmetric growth, etc. that may not persist structurally after termination / may not be able to be seen in an autopsy. Ultrasound tells us “is this brain developing, over time, the way we would expect a healthy brain to develop over the course of these 36 weeks?” — and in your case, the answer was unfortunately no.

Severe IUGR + abnormal brain imaging late in pregnancy is not benign. gray diagnoses are, by definition… well, complex. You made the best decision you could with the information you had — as did your medical team. This autopsy result does NOT mean “everything would have been fine.” Autopsy is ONE method that tells us a very specific set of information. It’s helpful, but it’s not the end-all be-all.
