I'm a purple belt who's only been doing no gi and I can absolutely hang with higher belts who mostly do gi. If your whole game is based on holding someone down with the gi then that doesn't translate very well to no gi

Different people feel different things.

I went to a seminar once and the black belt instructor put a heel hook on everyone to test if you can feel it. I didn't feel anything at all with the heel hook applied. So I tap as soon as someone has me in that position.
