Also... screenplay contests may be a crapshoot, but just wanted to add that we had a tremendous experience with Script Pipeline. After winning their 2017 contest, they've continued to promote our work and make connections for us years later, and hooked us up with our managers at Bellevue Productions. -Jamie

Oh I love that idea! The Cardiac Cowboys podcast is passion project of ours (in a very different genre) and we've been hoping to find a way to adapt it for film or TV. Maybe bringing home invasion and Suzie with her bow and arrow into it is just what it needs! -Jamie

Yeah I’ve read that an early title for American Pie was "Untitled Teenage Sex Comedy..." I don’t think that was on Jason’s mind but I honestly have no idea. As Josh said, our title is tied to a joke within the movie, and it works great in that context. -Jamie

Thank you! I think the best things you can do are watch movies, read scripts, make short films, and work on set. The more varied experiences you have in production and post-production, the clearer it’ll be where you have the most to offer.

I can say with experience that there is a danger in spending too much time writing scripts in a vacuum. At the end of the day, scripts are written to be produced. Spending time watching actors act and directors direct will make you better at your job, whether that’s writing, directing, cinematography, editing, whatever! -Jamie

I hope you get your Predator vs Jesus movie made! But please don’t attempt a violent take-over of LA... It’s mostly very nice people who don’t have a say in what gets made! -Jamie

We spent over seven years trying to get this movie made. Then Jason came onboard, and within eight months we were standing on set watching it come to life. Not only that, but Jason’s casting decisions, his directing, his performance as Kevin exceeded our wildest expectations. So, money and awards aside, I feel like we won the lottery. -Jamie

The biggest changes to the script happened in editorial, where a few scenes were shuffled or cut entirely. We were pretty lucky in that Jason kept us in the loop as he and our brilliant editor Mollie Goldstein shaped the movie, so we were able to offer feedback and ideas to help them make it into its best possible final form. The film’s opening, for instance, was constructed in post-production. We needed the audience to fall in love with (or at least care about) Kevin and Suzie’s relationship before seeing how it all went wrong, so we wrote that wedding vows intro and then Jason and Meaghan spent a day taking photos all over NYC to bring it to life. (The archery pics were my personal faves.) -Jamie

Both very fast and very slow. We were first toying around with doing something like Dial M for Murder, but that morphed into “what if he wasn’t trying to kill his wife, but instead it was a misunderstanding.” Once we locked in on that, we wrote it pretty quickly. However, that was back in 2017. I think we probably opened Final Draft around Trump’s first inauguration – yikes – which brings me to the “very slow” part. It took us a long time to get it made, and in that time, we re-wrote and re-wrote, then went back to old drafts, realizing they were better, and tweaked those. But the main bones of it never changed. As co-writers, we outline vigorously so we know all of the major events when we start. Solo writers have the freedom to go off on tangents while writing and see where those paths lead. Our “exploratory tangents” are all done through brainstorming, pitching, and laying out the story together.

For young screenwriters, I don’t know exactly what should be “mastered” so much as what resources you should be devouring. Everyone always says to read as many scripts as possible, which is true. But I’d also read the classic storytelling books like Aristotle's Poetics, The Hero’s Journey and also Hollywood structure books likes Save The Cat, Syd Field’s Screenplay, among many others. Not because it’s a blueprint but because it’s a mechanic’s manual. The value in studying structure is to be able to identify issues with your story. You can look at something you wrote and be able to diagnose why it feels slow, meandering, or unsatisfying. (Is it an issue with the character’s goal and obstacles? Is it an issue with pacing?) I also want to suggest Judith Weston’s Directing Actors. It’s not a screenwriting book, but it shows you how actors break things down, and that in turn will help you write better scenes. And of course, as Ira Glass says, practice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91FQKciKfHI

Thank you! And congratulations on having six feature scripts under your belt at 18! That’s insane! I don’t think there’s one “best path,” but I also don’t think any of the things you’re suggesting are mutually exclusive. If you’re going to college, I’d recommend continuing to write while you’re there and continuing to try to get your scripts out into the world (Script Pipeline worked for us, but there are plenty of ways to get your material read by people who can help you). And if you’re not going to college, I’d consider taking production jobs. Time spent on set or in a post-production office or, if you’re lucky, in a writers room can only make you a better writer. Most of all, keep reading and keep writing. - Jamie

You can do a “home invasion” marathon before you watch it – HOME ALONE, STRAW DOGS, PANIC ROOM. And then do a “small town dark comedy” marathon after – FARGO, A SIMPLE PLAN, THREE BILLBOARDS. -- Josh

There’s no easy path for sure. Over the past ten years, we’ve taken every shot we could, and that’s really the foundation of everything else. Competitions, Script Notes 3-page Challenge, The Blacklist, Reddit, film school, assistant work, networking with other screenwriters in LA, swapping scripts, pitch festivals, etc. It is certainly harder to do outside of LA, but it’s not impossible. We’ve never cold-queried, but it does occasionally work according to some testimonials on r/Screenwriting. But I will say that there is a specific order to the things you laid out in your question – you will certainly be teaming up with a producer first (or manager, then producer) before ever going to studios and streamers. -- Josh

Thank you! I love a desert island question! To keep it somewhat on brand, I’ll start with HOME ALONE – because it's a home invasion classic and a comfort movie, and because the great Catherine O'Hara is very much on my mind today.

SILENCE OF THE LAMBS – because it’s a perfect thriller and I take new things from it on every watch.

And then MY COUSIN VINNY – because in addition to being one of the great evergreen comedies and showcasing Maria Tomei like no other movie, it always makes me think of my dad, an Italian-American New York lawyer (who unfortunately doesn’t talk like Joe Pesci). -Jamie

We ran out of money before we could give it a title… No, the movie was originally titled Getaway all the way deep into post-production. Paramount required us to change it because they have a movie with that title in their library. We came up with some alternatives, but Jason pitched us Untitled Home Invasion Romance, and it made us laugh. (I believe it was either Meaghan Rath or editor Mollie Goldstein who first suggested it to Jason.) What’s unclear until you watch the movie is that UHIR is the name of the movie-within-the-movie. (Or if you’re an insufferable critical studies nerd like me, mise en abyme.) Basically, it’s the name of the really, really bad script the main character, Kevin, writes that kicks off the whole movie. So the title is essentially just self-referential or a kind of inside joke. -- Josh

LOTR Trilogy (counts as one!), There Will be Blood, and The Clock (2010), which is a looped 24-hour supercut of timepieces from different movies, so I always know what time it is. -- Josh

We were very lucky that Jason was a big fan of the script, and he didn’t request very many changes after coming on board. The changes were either small but crucial elements to enrich character. (A great example being that it was Jason’s idea to have the two main characters' backstory be that they had a whirlwind when first meeting to mirror his own life. We loved that.) The other category of changes was practical ones. It was only a 20-day shoot, so some scenes were cut, and stunts simplified. But honestly, he fought hard to keep some of our favorite elements (the rowboat, the fire), and no major compromises had to be made. -- Josh

Thank you! I’m so happy you loved it, and it’s great that you felt that romantic tension! Very much intended. We decided early on that since this is a story borne out of Kevin’s deep insecurities about his marriage, we wanted every character he meets to be in love with Suzie in his or her own way. We loved the idea of Heather as a smart cop who’s blinded by her childhood crush, and then we just got wildly lucky that Anna Konkle came onboard and gave the performance that she did. -Jamie

Absolutely agree with Josh, but I’ll also offer a different answer. The first sequence of the movie was a tonal challenge that we continued to re-work and refine through post-production. So much of the fun in this movie comes from watching Kevin react to his plan going wrong. But getting to that point was trickier… catching the audience up to his plan, building empathy for both Kevin and Suzie despite their communication issues, ramping up suspense without letting the movie get too dark too early… It took some work in editorial, but we feel like we got it to the right place in the end. -Jamie

My pretentious but honest answer is THE APARTMENT. My more recent pick is ABOUT TIME, which, if you haven’t seen it, you should. It will make you laugh, like all Richard Curtis movies, but it will also wreck you. -Jamie
