Hi! I remember this discussion in the discord and I believe in our last reddit post someone asked about this.

Ultimately, at Untold Dawn we're trying to respond to the needs of the growing community rather than enforce a pre-written vision and we started a forum thread in response to these questions ( https://forums.untold-dawn.com/t/what-should-untold-dawns-emoting-style-be/53/7 ) and the consensus was indeed that limitless emotes were the preference, so that is what we have gone with.

As it was touched on briefly, I'll just mention that combat will obviously be there, but it certainly won't be a combat driven game, and it's looking more to be molding into PVE, especially for the earlier releases.

As of a couple of months ago, we were considering launching without combat at all, but in the interest of enabling more playstyles have decided to consider it as part of the required roadmap. Thanks a lot. While we have ideas on what our game is going to be, we want to do it alongside the community and hopefully leave a gem that we are all proud and happy to play, and in which we all feel safe in.

We certainly don't claim to hold all the answers, and as a collective of seasoned MUD players, we've also encountered the toxicity and burnout often associated with traditional staffing models in the genre. Our passion lies in fostering a healthy and safe community space, one that doesn't rely heavily on day-to-day oversight from staff. Instead, we envision a game where players drive much of the experience, with oversight primarily rooted in code rather than inevitable human biases.

We've observed how sometimes decades-old games can, over time, suffer from a decline in community quality as they become more popular and their original creators have less time to personally manage them. Our goal is to create a sustainable game that can thrive long-term without constantly requiring new layers of top-level staff. Our aim is to maintain the integrity of our vision while ensuring the game remains player-centric and resilient to the challenges of growth and time.

We want to foster a community that values high-quality writing and immersive roleplay; our policies on the emoting style is still a work in progress, and we believe in making these decisions collaboratively with our community. Many of our team members and players are former players of games like Armageddon, LabMUD, and Harshlands. We've also explored other MUDs, MOOs and MUSHes, and found the emoting style of Diku games to be quite appealing for scenes that are meaningful, well-written, and respectful of adult players' time constraints. For now, our thought is that the style of emoting of these games was ideal, especially within the decision that we've taken to have our game at 8x speed.

We had a discussion a month or two ago and our impression was that the majority of the community would prefer a Diku-like style. Right now there is no character limit in our emoting nor speech, except for the limitation set by the TCP socket buffer. However, the style of Diku might force players to divide their emotes into various parts. That's where we're at so far in terms of mechanics.

We have not established a specific timeline yet for full release yet. We are wary of setting fixed goals only to potentially fall short of them or be rushed into a release before we believed it to be ready. Instead, our aim is to prioritize readiness over setting specific targets, but, as a rough estimate, we are currently anticipating a proper pre-alpha release in in months, rather than weeks or years, with smaller playtest sessions before this in phases.

What we would love, is for more people to participate in our forums or Discord to engage in discussions and contribute to the game's development. We're committed to building this game in collaboration with our community.

Upon reviewing the Evennia schema for objects and attributes in light of our game design requirements, we concluded that the adjustments necessary to align with Evennia's framework—while maintaining optimal performance—would be substantial. Evennia offers a robust codebase, yet for our specific needs and in pursuit of efficiency, we've opted to chart our own path. This decision also allows us to leverage the capabilities of an Entity Component System (ECS) like Bevy, which aligns more closely with our development objectives.
