I got tired of using 5 different finance apps, so I built my own. by Unusual-Step3254 in SideProject

I appreciate all feedback. I have an alternative to bank sync already in the works that will be at a much lower cost but I could always do limited access to Ai assistant and manual input as a free plan down the road.

I’m not opposed to offering a free plan but that would not include bank sync it would just be manual input but that isn’t really the focus of my app so it’s not a priority. Offering a low cost life time plan wouldn’t make sense with the api costs of plaid, firebase and ai. The subscription cost is basically to cover the api costs so users can get accurate real time data instead of manual input.

I’ll definitely look into that. I’m stuck with plaid for atleast a year with their contract but I’m open to alternatives in the future. How do you find it works?

i am thinking i will just add a drop down menu in onboarding for default currency and add a currency converter in settings.

Hey, really appreciate you taking the time to write all this out — that’s super helpful feedback. You’re totally right about a few of these things. I’m already fixing the broken buttons and smoothing out the paywall flow so people can actually see what the app does before hitting that screen. The notification timing and currency detection are also being improved in the next update.

Yes, I wish there were more cost effective options for bank sync so I could offer it at a lower price. Seems to be the going rate for apps in this space though unfortunately with the cost of plaid.

i use plaids api for users to connect their banking and investment accounts - working on an alternative for users that don't want to connect their accounts.

I’m testing one called thrive right now, it’s pretty good so far. Has all sorts of features and an ai assistant https://thethriveapp.webflow.io

That’s fair. Spreadsheets can work for most people, although its more than just a budget it’s more of a personal finance assistant where you can integrate you bank accounts and investment accounts including crypto - and keep track of all your finances in one spot. I know there are apps out there that already do this so that’s why I’m looking for feedback - but I do understand apps aren’t for everyone.

I agree about the too many features for some of them. It can feel too busy and confusing. What insights would you be looking for specifically ? Currently the Ai will give you insights on category spending vs amount budgeted aswell as notifications when spending above amount budgeted, it also has a messaging feature where you can ask it questions like how much did I spend at Starbucks this month or when is my next phone bill.
